  • Sunday preview: After Brandon Marshall’s fit, Bears don’t see what the fuss is about

    25 Oct 2014 | 2:35 pm
Bears guard Matt Slauson played with the New York Jets during the Mark Sanchez era. The fallout from Brandon Marshall’s locker-room rant was just another week to him. ‘‘This has been nothing compared to what I’ve dealt with in the past,’’ Slauson said. ‘‘I’m proud of this team. They haven’t let any of the outside stuff come in. The Bears’ glut of offensive talent gave New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick plenty to talk about this week. There was outright adoration for running back Matt Forte. Even kicker Robbie Gould, who was described by Belichick as “one of the best, most-accurate guys in the league,” received some love. But that love will be expressed in tough ways on Sunday. No coach knows how to effectively neutralize a team’s weapons better than Belichick. And Bears coach Marc Trestman’s ability to win his chess match with Belichick, the three-time Super Bowl champion, might ultimately decide…

Every time the Bears win, it’s 1985 all over again, only better — there’s no containing this new-age Marc Trestman offense. Ratliff let out a long sigh, knowing the Bears were running out of time to right their season. ‘‘It’d be nice to leave this thing with a ring on my hand, to put it bluntly,’’ he said. ‘‘And that’s what it’s all about right now.’’ It was a live, in-person demonstration of what…

While betting online occurs anyway, the UIGEA does officially continue to hold sway on U.S. soil, which has led to the increasing volume of what used to be a small complaint against one of the most popular pastimes the American public has ever…
  • What Will The Vikings Do Without Adrian Peterson?

    Sujeet
    14 Oct 2014 | 8:26 am
In early September 2014, star Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was arrested for beating his four-year-old son with a switch. Originally, the Vikings pulled him from the roster for a single game against the Patriots. After more consideration, they placed Peterson on the NFL’s Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission List, which means that Peterson won’t be playing until his legal troubles are concluded. The corporal punishment debate rages on in the mainstream media, but fans who love football and who bet on sports online are more concerned about what’s going to happen to the…
  • NFC West: The Toughest Division in Football?

    13 Oct 2014 | 8:22 am
By now it’s been hashed to death that the Seattle Seahawks defense is what was responsible for a trouncing of their AFC competition in the Super Bowl this past season but the cutthroat division that produced that defense is rarely examined. It’s the intensity of the competition that exists in a culture of bigger and better defenses that produced a team with arguably the best defense in the history of the game. Below is an assessment of the recent champions and each of the teams that regularly challenges them at their own game. Seahawks The Seahawks last season was obviously a good one.

    10 Oct 2014 | 6:39 am
The 2014-15 NFL season is almost a third of the way over as Week 6 is set to roll along. The first five weeks have gone as expected for some of the best teams in the league, most notably the ones in Seattle and Denver, where the Seahawks and Broncos are looking good at 3-1. Meanwhile, perennial contenders in the Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots are all 3-2 after working out some early season issues. The Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints were picked by many to join that group of possible Super Bowl contenders in the NFC, but both have started the season…

Six teams are going to be able to sit at home and watch their NFL brothers play in 13 games on Sunday, as the Cardinals, Rams, Bengals, Browns, Broncos and Seahawks all get the first bye week of the NFL season this weekend. The Cardinals are the only NFC unbeaten of the bunch at 3-0, and they will likely have a keen eye on their NFC West counterparts, the 49ers, as they will be at home this weekend to take on the Philadelphia Eagles. The two AFC North teams on bye, the unbeaten Bengals and the 1-2 Browns will watch their other two AFC North foes take on a pair of the teams from the NFC South,…

The ship has sailed on Washington Redskins’ quarterback Kirk Cousins. Once an overrated commodity in the offseason the Redskins were unable to pull the trigger on a trade and will now suffer. The Redskins’ backup quarterback drew interest from a number of teams during the 2014 NFL Draft, but none of them interested general manager Bruce Allen. What makes Peyton Manning the greatest quarterback ever to play in the NFL are the little things. Things that not every fan may notice. To many, it’s his accomplishments they will focus on and the upcoming records he could break. Odds are the allpro will break these records in only a matter of time. Manning is now under 5,000 yards, 1,500 pass attempts, and 600 completions short of Brett Favre for all-time passing records.

I do not think there was a single person come Sunday night that expected Brett Favre to remain in possession of the career touchdown pass record at game’s end. I have always liked Peyton Manning as a person and as a quarterback, and that is how I will talk about him: as a person, and as a quarterback. Manning is not an unstoppable captain of a team prepared to steamroll the remainder of their opponents. He is one of the best quarterbacks ever, yes, but even his latest achievement does not make him the greatest of all time. Using one word for each of his touchdowns, here’s…

Baltimore Ravens Vs Cincinnati Bengals: BAL -1 (Pinnacle) Market WatchWhat a difference a week makes. The Ravens were +3.5 point dogs before Week 7 action. Once the dust settled over the weekend, this line reopened at -2.5, and quickly got bet down to -1.5. Since then it's been nothing but Ravens money. In fact, it just crossed over 0 and we are now seeing the Bengals as +1 point dogs. 68% of the bets agree with the line move.Bottom LineWho covers: Ravens or Bengals? It reopened at -2.5 after Week 7, and now we're seeing a move to -3.  Someone needs to explain this to me because I don't get it. It also looks like I'm in the minority as 59% of the bets are on the J-E-T-S.Bottom LineWho covers: Bills or Jets When the Seattle Seahawks first acquired Percy Harvin, there were some fantastic articles written about how he could enhance their offense. Indianapolis Colts Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: IND -3 (Pinnacle)Market WatchBefore Week 7 the Colts were -1.5 point favorites for this game. After they beat up on the Bengals it reopened at -2.5. Even a Steelers win in prime-time could do nothing to slow down the money on Indy. It was promptly moved to -2.75, and we've now seen a full move to -3. I don't think anyone with eyes trust Pittsburgh right now, and a massive 89% of the bets are on the road team here.Bottom LineWho covers: Colts or SteelersIt's not just the eye test though. Is there a chance that this goes down to -3?  I'd be surprised. I think this line should be higher, so I'm comfortable laying the hook. So far, about  55% of the action is on the Lions.Bottom LineWho covers: Lions or Falcons? The biggest stat that jumps out at us for this game is the horrendous 0-4 road record for the Falcons. The 2014 NFL season has been filled with a ton of action and surprises. However, There is one surprise that many could have seen coming, but did not really believe would happen. Heading into this week both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders were win less. It was a consensus pick this year that both of these teams were going to have poor seasons, but to start 0-6 is just plain brutal. Our writers are back for another week of helping you decide where to put your money (if you’re into that sort of thing) on this weekend’s Big Ten games. Let’s see how they see things shaking out. Minnesota (-6.5) at Illinois Ryan Osbahr — Easy pickings, Minnesota runs the ball, Illinois can’t stop the run. Gophers roll before the by week and move to 7-1 and prep for November. Take Minnesota. James Needham —  I like Minnesota to keep moving along and winning games, but they won’t cover the spread. This game will be close a late field goal wins it for the…

    admin
    23 Oct 2014 | 11:55 am
Pride. That has to be the word of the day for the Wolverines in East Lansing on Saturday.  Nothing is more telling than being a 17 point underdog to a school that you once called little brother. 17 points. Soak that in Michigan fans. That is how far our once great program has fallen. To put it into even greater perspective, Michigan has not even scored a touchdown against Michigan State since 2011. So like every Saturday this season, I’m hoping the Michigan team of old comes out, and they play with a little pride and a little bit of fire and passion. Is this a make or break game for Hoke?

Last week I went 8-7 when playing with the points and 10-5 just picking winners. The yearly record is now 71-34-1 SU and 62-41-3 ATS.  Lets jump into Thursday night which is a big one…Chargers (+9) over BRONCOS- This has the makings of a terrific football game and will solidify people’s feelings about San Diego one way or the other. On paper it is hard to imagine the Chargers being able to keep the Broncos offense in check, but they have been playing very well this season and don’t seem to make many glaring mistakes that Peyton Manning would eat up. Denver’s defense…

According to multiple outlets the Jets and wide receiver Jeremy Kerley have agreed to a four year contract extension worth $16 million with $5.4 million of the contract guaranteed. The reported numbers put Kerley right below recent contracts signed by Julian Edelman ($4.25M per year) and Doug Baldwin ($4.33M). The total dollar figure and guarantee seem to indicate a contract very similar to the one signed by Andre Roberts with the Washington Redskins at $16 million with a $5.25 million guarantee.I would assume Kerley’s $5.4 million guarantee is a true guarantee and not a combination of…

  • Can the NFL Really Pull Off the UK Experiment?

    Peter Benson
    24 Oct 2014 | 11:48 am
On Sunday, something historic is going to happen. The Atlanta Falcons will play a home game against the Detroit Lions. In London. Plenty of NFL teams have now achieved this feat. The International Series has been running for seven years in the UK capital and has been a great success. Barring 2009’s meeting between the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, every game has sold out Wembley Stadium. Fans from all around Europe are flocking to see the spectacle that is the NFL and have been for some time. So why is this one the most meaningful yet? It is the tenth game for a start. Double…

Throughout the season the broncos have been flawless. Manning has thrown more TD's than any other QB and hasn't shown any signs of aging or injury issues. With his receiving core of Sanders, the Thomas's and Welker they have been unstoppable this season. And when the defenses try and stop the pass by double covering or playing zone they run into another problem because of Hillman and his improved running ability. And on the other side of the ball the Broncos are dealt with a much improved defense from last year only allowing 300 total yard per game. What is the Broncos biggest weakness, and…

So here we are. The Browns lost to one of the worst teams in the league in week 7. Brian Hoyer has been...to be honest, we don't know what he is. **With a very favorable matchup against Oakland, should Johnny Manziel see a bigger role? Can he make this offense dangerous?** Hoyer has been very unpredictable, he has had terrible games, and great games, 7 TDs and 3 turnovers in 6 games. He shows up when he isn't supposed to and then the best matchup he had all year, he puts in a horrific performance. The 0-6 Raiders are coming to town and the rookie Derek Carr is looking for his first win.
  • The X-Factor: Talent or Chemistry?

    Nick Coppola
    23 Oct 2014 | 5:58 pm
In my opinion, I think chemistry slightly trumps talent when it comes to a good NFL team. You can be the best player at your position in the league but if you can't play with your teammates and work within the offensive/defensive scheme then most of that talent goes to waste. Take the Percy Harvin trade for example. Harvin is one of the most explosive players in the league with the ball in his hands, but locker room issues forced the Seahawks to move him despite his big play ability. This leads me to believe that the lack of chemistry between him and his teammates was the deciding factor. I…

The NFL trade deadline is just a few days away, yet there seems to be very little activity taking place. For fans of the Premier League, the weeks leading up to the close of the transfer window mark some of the most interesting and exciting of the whole season, so many English NFL fans are surprised to discover that the trade deadline in the NFL is nowhere near as exciting or fraught with activity. We take a look at why this is, and seek to understand trading in the NFL a little better. What is the NFL trade deadline? The NFL Trade deadline is the final date at which NFL Teams can directly…

Manning achieved the milestone—509 touchdowns to pass Favre, adding a 510th soon therafter—in 56 fewer games, and over 3 fewer seasons than Favre, and looks set to increase that number significantly, as part of one of the most potent offensive groups of all time. Just 2 weeks…

#455557383 / gettyimages.com The first six weeks of the NFL season are in the books, and already some stats are beginning to emerge. One of the most surprising, however, is that the Arizona Cardinals entered their game against the Oakland Raiders as the only team without an Interception, in spite of three different QBs splitting time under centre. And although the Cardinals finally threw their first pick during this game, we take a look at this curious anomaly. If, prior to the season, I had told you that after 5 games, a team would still be without an interception, you would perhaps not have…

#186033709 / gettyimages.com By now, it will come as no surprise to anyone to learn that the NFL wants a franchise in London. And what a big, international sports and media conglomerate wants, it usually gets. Now, the FA has admitted it would be willing to travel around the country for its home games, essentially freeing up Wembley Stadium to host a full season of gridiron football. Though the NFL has been clear in its message—there will be a permanent franchise based in the UK—one of the major concerns for the league, fans and any potential ownership group has been where the franchise…

With the English Premier League considering adopting a similar rule to the NFL’s “Rooney Rule”, we take a look at what it is, how it works and what it has meant for the NFL as a whole. What is the Rooney Rule? Put simply, the Rooney Rule is a requirement that for every head coaching and other senior football operations (eg, General Manager) position, at least one black, or other minority, candidate is interviewed. It is a form of affirmative action—sometimes called “positive discrimination”—aimed to tackle a perceived underrepresentation of a certain group in…

The Detroit Lions face off against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday morning in London, England at 9:30am eastern time.  It’s a game that promises to be exciting given that Atlanta has two very good receivers in Roddy White and Julio Jones.  While they are having an off year this year, they are still explosive and will give the number one Detroit Lions defense problems all day.  This is a very scary game for Lions fans.  Atlanta’s offense has historically been good.  This year, they have struggled mightily leading them to a 2-5 record.  I believe Atlanta’s better than their…
