The Bucs return to the field this Sunday, and while most figure Mike Glennon will be behind center, there is a chance that Josh McCown gets reinserted by his favorite fan, Lovie Smith. Glennon has been the better quarterback of the two this season, but Lovie Smith has been loyal to a fault with Josh McCown from the moment he signed with the Buccaneers.

    22 Oct 2014 | 12:37 pm
It's no secret the primary struggles on this buccaneers team so far has been the play of the defense. Offenses are favored in this new era of the NFL that it immediately puts defenses at a disadvantage. But it shouldn't be as bad as we've seen on Sundays (and Thursday) from a Lovie Smith defense.
  • Mentality Needs to Change

    22 Oct 2014 | 5:45 am
Immediately following their 48-17 loss to the Ravens, the Bucs received deserved criticism from most around the Tampa Bay area. My focus was on the lack of leadership for allowing a "loser" mentality to permeate through that locker room for significantly longer than it should have. A change needed to be made to their mentality, and that's just what Lovie Smith focused on during the Bucs bye week.

It’s a bizarre week to debate whether Bears quarterback Jay Cutler can, will be or already is an elite quarterback. Yet, here we are, and we have Bears fan “Ryan” to thank for broaching the always-steamy topic during a team-run chat with general manager Phil Emery this week. “No matter how you analyze the history of quarterbacks in the NFL,” Emery replied, “if you have a winning record, you are an elite player at that position.” That would include Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman and Mark Sanchez and their not-so-special careers. Then there’s Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, whom the…

The modern era of football has seen two opposing ideas worked into playbooks as if it were imperative they co-exist. I’m talking about attacking the defense with either a running quarterback or a passing one, which to outsiders might seem as trivial as casting a blonde or brunette Bond girl. Let’s just agree that both work.Of course, there’s no reason why a quarterback can’t be both, that is, an excellent runner who's also able to fire a 30-yard bullet between defenders arms, bobbing helmets and spittle. Seattle’s Russell Wilson might just be the best example of such a player,…

  • TPF Fives: Week 7 Rankings

    Michael Beaudwin
    22 Oct 2014 | 2:17 pm
You want some Week 7 Rankings? Of course, we all do. The Top Five and the Bottom Five haven’t changed too much, but there are some newcomers. The Five in the Middle is where the action is at. Those are teams that are hovering near the top or sinking towards the bottom. Take a look in this week’s TPF Fives. The Top Five #1. Denver Broncos [5-1] Denver has been on a mission since February 3, 2014. That mission: return to the Super Bowl. There is a strong chance this Denver team completes that mission. Peyton is still playing literally at a historic level. The defense is pretty good…

Michael Vick will be forever judged as a man full of mistakes. A star-studded NFL player who made wrong choices along his career path. Michael Vick’s latest mistake might be the biggest one of his professional career. After five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Vick had his choice between the New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  At 34 years old, none of the teams saw him as a starter. Plus, his history of injuries have prevented him from playing more than 13 games in a single season.  Instead of a starter, teams were looking for depth and…

With Peyton Manning closing in on becoming the all time touchdown leader in the NFL the debate of who is the greatest quarterback of all talk will spark. So might, as well get in on it, but my rankings will be different. They won’t be judged on stats alone but more on there impact on the game. Meaning if they were innovators, influenced future quarterbacks or brought more eyes to the game, it is not based off top quarterbacks of all time. George Washington: Roger Staubach. It’s safe to view these Week 6 Rankings as a reflection of the week (and maybe a few games prior), more than a complete review of the team for the year so far. Why? Well, have you watched football at all this year? Most teams are floating around 3-3 and it’s been pretty hard to get a handle on the identity of anyone. Dallas beat Seattle, in Seattle! Oakland almost topples San Diego. And Philly silenced the the noise coming out of New York. For the Giants anyways. The Jets deserve the flak they’ve been getting. The Top Five #1. Denver Broncos [4-1] Denver still looks to be…

  • NFL Betting Preview 2014 Week 8: Chargers Vs. Broncos

    Bobby Brooks
    22 Oct 2014 | 11:00 am
San Diego Chargers Vs. Denver BroncosMarket WatchThis is one of the more interesting point spreads on the board for Week 8. In the advanced line atWestgate, the Broncos were -6.5 point favorites. After Week 7 action it reopened at -7, and it's been promptly bet off that key number. It currently sits at -7.5, but there are also -8's out there too. I think this line is pretty accurate. To no one's surprise, 61% of the early tickets are on the home team.Bottom LineWho covers: Chargers or Broncos?I had this game circled a few weeks ago with the intentions of making a play on the…

Peyton Manning put on a record setting show as Week 7 is in the books. Underdogs came out on top for the first time since Week 2, going 8-7 ATS. For the year, favorites have a slight lead 53-50-2.Around town, Football Outsiders continued to lose going 7-8 ATS, now 41-60-1 on the season. Las Vegas SuperContest top 5 consensus picks went 3-2 ATS, improving to 20-15 on the year.Last week I tweeted out the season records from "Pros & Joes" according to Jay Fornegay and Todd Furhman. 20 Oct 2014 | 8:20 am
Houston Texans Vs. Pittsburgh SteelersMarket WatchThis line was -4 in the Westgate look-ahead line and reopened at the same number after the Week 6 games. It was bet down to -3.5, and it stayed here until Friday. We've since seen it bet down to the key number of -3.  What should we make of this? The fact that the hook was available for most of the week should tell you something. There was some value on the Texans, but sharp money wasn't exactly keen to get on it earlier in the week. Overall, betting is appropriately split down the middle as 51% of the tickets are…

The best options for teasers are games that either bring a favorite down under -3, or brings a dog up over a touchdown. Bobby Brooks
    17 Oct 2014 | 12:30 am
Week 6 is in the books and favorites came out on top 8-6, and it's the fourth consecutive week that favorites have covered the majority of the games. They lead 46-42-2 on the year. It was a big week for overs going 10-5, and they increase the lead 50-41 on the season. These are trends that don't bode well for the books, but we'll see how long it can continue...The Las Vegas SuperContest consensus picks went 2-3, and now sit 17-13 on the year. Football Outsiders said they expected their picks to win from here on out, but they went 6-9 this week. Their total is now 34-54-3.My picks were a…

There’s two things that can ruin my Sunday during football season. One, the Seahawks losing a game in which they’re favored. And two, when my fantasy football team loses any game! If there’s ever a combination of these two situations then watch out! While there’s nothing I can do to help after a Seahawk loss. The 2014 NFL season has been filled with a ton of action and surprises. However, There is one surprise that many could have seen coming, but did not really believe would happen. Heading into this week both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders were win less. It was a consensus pick this year that both of these teams were going to have poor seasons, but to start 0-6 is just plain brutal. However, the Jaguars were able to get their first win of the year by defeating the Cleveland Browns. The Browns were awarded the easiest schedule for the next three weeks as they will face the…

We were able to get back to .500 last week, as we went (2-1) with the picks. Loved San Fran going against a mediocre Rams team and Chicago getting points against the Falcons. Only team that let me down and fooled me was the Giants. They looked like a team that finally figured it out, but in the words of the great Rowdy Roddy Piper “When you think you figured out the answer. I change the question”! The Giants looked awful on Sunday Night Football and prevented an undefeated week. The theme for this weeks picks is 7, as every game I’m taking has a spread of 7 points. Like- San…

Our writers have weighed in with their votes on who the offensive and defensive players of the week as well as coach of the week were for Week 8 of the Big Ten season. Let’s see what they came up with. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK J.T. Barrett, Ohio State — As one of our writers put it, “If anyone other than this guys gets it we should have our heads examined.” For the second game in a row he put on a display not expected from a freshman. On Saturday, he passed for two touchdowns, and ran for three more, albeit against an overmatched Rutgers squad. He continues to…

It was another eventful weekend of Big Ten football in which we learned more about a couple of teams and had what we already knew validated by others. Maryland — Heading into the Ohio State game last week, many of us were thinking Maryland was a pretty good team. When the Buckeyes trounced them, some of us took a step back. After the Iowa game on Saturday, I’m back on the “Maryland is a good team” wagon. Stefon Diggs looked like the stud wideout he’s been hyped up to be and Maryland grinded out a tough win over a solid opponent. The Terps are now one win away…

How did Rutgers do?  Other than not measuring up in offense, defense, and special teams, not bad.  They were a step slower than the Buckeyes in every aspect of the game, and just didn’t have the firepower to match up…
  • Big Ten Week 8 Writers Picks Against the Spread

    17 Oct 2014 | 11:57 am
Our writers are back for another week of picks against the spreads set by the wise guys in Las Vegas. Let’s see how they have the Big Ten games shaping up this weekend. Iowa at Maryland (-4.5) James Needham –I think if Iowa can run the ball and play the same type of defense that OSU played against Maryland this game could get ugly quick for the Terps.  I like Iowa to win by more than 10. Jim H. — I think a week bye for Maryland and being forced to hear for two weeks how they don’t measure up after getting pounded by tOSU is going to be taken out on the Hawkeyes.

According to multiple outlets the Jets and wide receiver Jeremy Kerley have agreed to a four year contract extension worth $16 million with $5.4 million of the contract guaranteed. The reported numbers put Kerley right below recent contracts signed by Julian Edelman ($4.25M per year) and Doug Baldwin ($4.33M). The total dollar figure and guarantee seem to indicate a contract very similar to the one signed by Andre Roberts with the Washington Redskins at $16 million with a $5.25 million guarantee.I would assume Kerley’s $5.4 million guarantee is a true guarantee and not a combination of…

With Monday night now in the books we have our official power rankings up to date. In case you have not read these before the rankings are based on a formula that measures how well (or poor) a team has performed against their specific schedule. So to read the chart for Denver you would say that the team scores 53.3% more points than their schedule allowed against all other teams and held their schedule to 18.3% below their normal points scored. The projected wins is based on a regression formula so that’s why in some cases teams are already above or below their projections. The projections…

  • A.J. Green is the fuel that makes the Bengals go

    Stephen Forbus
    21 Oct 2014 | 4:24 pm
Take a look at the Cincinnati Bengals the last three weeks and you can clearly see that A.J. Green is the most important piece to that offensive puzzle. Without him, their offense is subpar for a team that is supposed to have so many weapons and one that many touted in pre-season as the best in the NFL. A.J. Green makes everything in that offense run smoother and if there is not a clear timetable for his return, then the Bengals are in some serious trouble. Ahh, the good ol' days...three weeks ago NFL.com had the Cincinnati Bengals ranked number one in their power rankings. They were coming…
  • Does Anyone Want the NFC South?

    Megan Landvatter
    21 Oct 2014 | 4:07 pm
The NFC South, arguably the worst division in football right now, has a 0.326 average winning percentage so far this season. The Carolina Panthers (3-3-1), are winning the division, followed by the New Orleans Saints (2-4), the Atlanta Falcons (2-5), and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5). Perhaps the most surprising thing about this division being the worst is the teams playing in it.While many expected Tampa Bay to struggle, no one predicted that Carolina, New Orleans, and Atlanta would all experience trouble this early in the season. The Carolina Panthers seemed to be on the rise heading into…
  • Who can challenge Manning's record?

    Nels Nelsen
    21 Oct 2014 | 3:54 pm
Peyton Manning just set the record for most touchdown passes of all-time, currently sitting at 510. There's talk that he could possibly make it to 600 by the time he hangs up his cleats. That's a pretty astronomical number in the grand scheme of the game, but not unreachable with newer rules set in place to protect quarterbacks and hinder defenses. With a handful of future hall-of-famers and young gunslingers nipping at his heels, which passer has the best chance of catching Manning? Look no further than his old stomping grounds in Indy because Andrew Luck will break that record someday.
  • Reviving the Argument for Tim Tebow

    Chris Jalil
    21 Oct 2014 | 3:04 pm
Tim Tebow deserves an honest second chance in the NFL, and no, I’m not talking about anything akin to the marketing ploys the Jets and Patriots pulled. And there are two main reasons for my petition. First of all, the NFL needs a serious face lift. Guys like **Adrian Peterson** and **Greg Hardy** have left it with a serious image problem. Secondly, there are _10 teams in football with 2 wins or less_. And most of them have big issues at the quarterback position *cough* Rams, Raiders, Titans, Bucs, Redskins *cough*. Tim Tebow is not perfect, and he’s not a superstar, but the former Florida…

  • Peyton Manning Surpasses Brett Favre to Take All-Time TD Record in SNF Rout.

    LukeHB
    20 Oct 2014 | 4:13 am
#457523484 / gettyimages.com Few would question calling Peyton Manning the greatest quarterback of his generation, perhaps all time, and with his fourth touchdown in Sunday Night’s rout of the San Francisco 49ers, continued his quest to make it official, topping Brett Favre’s all time touchdown record. Manning achieved the milestone—509 touchdowns to pass Favre, adding a 510th soon therafter—in 56 fewer games, and over 3 fewer seasons than Favre, and looks set to increase that number significantly, as part of one of the most potent offensive groups of all time. Just 2 weeks…
  • After 6 Games and 3 QBs Arizona Cardinals Finally Throw Interception.

    LukeHB
    20 Oct 2014 | 2:33 am
#455557383 / gettyimages.com The first six weeks of the NFL season are in the books, and already some stats are beginning to emerge. One of the most surprising, however, is that the Arizona Cardinals entered their game against the Oakland Raiders as the only team without an Interception, in spite of three different QBs splitting time under centre. And although the Cardinals finally threw their first pick during this game, we take a look at this curious anomaly. If, prior to the season, I had told you that after 5 games, a team would still be without an interception, you would perhaps not have…
  • England National Team Willing to Tour to Make Space for NFL London Franchise after 2017.

    LukeHB
    9 Oct 2014 | 2:03 am
#186033709 / gettyimages.com By now, it will come as no surprise to anyone to learn that the NFL wants a franchise in London. And what a big, international sports and media conglomerate wants, it usually gets. Now, the FA has admitted it would be willing to travel around the country for its home games, essentially freeing up Wembley Stadium to host a full season of gridiron football. Though the NFL has been clear in its message—there will be a permanent franchise based in the UK—one of the major concerns for the league, fans and any potential ownership group has been where the franchise…
  • A British Fans Guide To: The Rooney Rule

    LukeHB
    6 Oct 2014 | 10:31 am
With the English Premier League considering adopting a similar rule to the NFL’s “Rooney Rule”, we take a look at what it is, how it works and what it has meant for the NFL as a whole. What is the Rooney Rule? Put simply, the Rooney Rule is a requirement that for every head coaching and other senior football operations (eg, General Manager) position, at least one black, or other minority, candidate is interviewed. It is a form of affirmative action—sometimes called “positive discrimination”—aimed to tackle a perceived underrepresentation of a certain group in…
  • Which 3-0 Team Can Remain Undefeated After Week 5

    LukeHB
    3 Oct 2014 | 4:17 am
#186056863 / gettyimages.com With each passing week, the 1972 Dolphins can breathe a little easier. Heading into Week 5, there are only two remaining undefeated teams in the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals. We take a look at both, and see which, if any, can hope to make it to 4-0. Both remaining undefeated teams—the Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals—were inactive on their bye weeks during Week 4, when the Philadelphia Eagles were handed their first defeat of the season. At the moment, no team in the NFL has made it to the quarter mark of the season unbeaten, but…

  • Detroit Lions Sign Jerome Couplin To Practice Squad

    Vince Vielhaber
    22 Oct 2014 | 6:33 am
The Detroit Lions added Jerome Couplin back to their roster, this time on the practice squad.  Couplin cleared waivers after the Lions released him a few days ago and he was expected to be re-added to the practice squad.  The team flew William Powell home from London and released him from the team to make room for Couplin on the practice squad.  Coach Jim Caldwell mentioned that the move to add Couplin was due to a need at that position for practice purposes.  With his youth and potential it was impossible to think the Lions would simply set Couplin walk this soon.  Couplin will be flown…
  • Detroit Lions Release William Powell From Practice Squad

    Vince Vielhaber
    22 Oct 2014 | 6:26 am
The Detroit Lions released William Powell from the practice squad today, ending his short trip to London.  Powell, who was with the team when they flew to London, was informed today after former Lion safety Jerome Couplin cleared waivers.  It is expected that the team will fly Powell back to Detroit as soon as possible.  Lions coach Jim Caldwell stated that it was a tough decision to do that to Powell, but at the same time the NFL is a business and the move was necessary to get the personnel they need for practice this week.  A corresponding move is expected shortly.
  • 2014 Week 8 Notes Lions Land In London

    Vince Vielhaber
    21 Oct 2014 | 2:50 pm
The Detroit Lions have landed in London, England and the local fans there could not be happier.  After a 7 hour flight that left players and coaches exhausted from the time difference, the Lions went to the NFL’s Play 60 event.  They met with fans of all ages, signed autographs and had fun with the young British fans.  They start their practice schedule Wednesday as usual and have some other events to tend to near the end of the week for the fans out there.  Here are some of our notes for week 8: Calvin Johnson has started to do some running.  He said his ankle is feeling better…
  • Detroit Lions Sign Ifeanyi Momah To Practice Squad

    Vince Vielhaber
    20 Oct 2014 | 12:35 pm
The Detroit Lions made a “big” addition to their practice squad today.  They signed 6’7″ receiver Ifeanyi Momah.  Momah will likely be used to help the Lions corners prepare to play against the bigger receiver that Atlanta has in Julio Jones.  Jones has to be a big concern for the team this week as he has been dominant in games that he plays.  It also helps the team if they need another receiver with size to have Momah in their arsenal. So far, Momah has been largely a practice squad player.  He was signed by the Eagles in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of…
  • Detroit Lions Sign Tight End Kellen Davis

    Vince Vielhaber
    20 Oct 2014 | 11:35 am
The Detroit Lions signed tight end Kellen Davis today.  The move was not really a shock as it was reported last week that he was in for a workout.  Given that Joseph Fauria and Eric Ebron have been out with injuries, and that now Brandon Pettigrew is banged up, the team likely felt that they needed to have an extra healthy tight end this week just in case Pettigrew’s injury keeps him limited.  The Lions promoted Jordan Thompson from the practice squad last week as well to give them two healthy tight ends and possibly three active tight ends for the game against Atlanta. Davis, a…

  • Sportsmanship Brigade strikes gold in Ferguson

    12 Oct 2014 | 8:23 pm
Ferguson, Mo. has been the epicenter of community unrest in the St. Louis area over the last several weeks. Anger, passion, and uncertainty fill the streets on a daily (and nightly) basis. The situation has forced the region to examine race, law enforcement and its overall structure. Suffice it to say, life in St. Louis will never be the same. However, unrest cannot be allowed to upset the lives of the youngest among us. The Sportsmanship Brigade visited Blessed Teresa of Calcutta parish in Ferguson on Friday night for three youth volleyball games. We went looking for good sportsmanship and…

  • Silent soccer makes loud thud

    30 Sep 2014 | 12:29 pm
In Lebanon, Ohio last weekend, a youth soccer league implemented "silent soccer." Yes, it's what it sounds like. Parents are limited to holding up signs and waving rally towels. No cheering or loud noises allowed. Coaches are limited to minimal instruction during the game.No yelling. No screaming.Sigh...Please watch the video blog below from cincinnati.com (email subscribers click here to view media).Overzealous parents are a thorn in the side of may youth sports leagues. Some would like parents to be seen and not heard -- as is the case in Lebanon. Others would prefer that parents not show…
