But Lane would have no idea. “I really don’t worry about where I am on the depth chart or things like that,” Lane said. “If you start worrying about that, you can lose your edge. Here's a thought — if you added Tim Tebow to the current Cleveland Browns quarterbacking mix who would you pick as the starter: Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel, or Tebow?Because the three have impressed few, you might defer to the most famous player. This would at least be in keeping with the adopted process of several NFL general managers in such a scenario. The potential to be an icon often outweighs the promise of accurate passing, after all.Browns coach Mike Pettine recently said that he wants his players running scared a little bit, presumably to instil the idea that nobody’s job is…

In the world of money collection there have been a few exceptional talents. Among them, Rocky Balboa, Chili Palmer and that roundish guy from Rounders. Not surprisingly, they all packed a punch, and a few pounds. The ultimate pound of flesh guy was Shakespeare's Shylock, of course, but it's way too early in the football calendar to get literary. Let's save that for when the Raiders and Dolphins meet in London Town. Now you could employ one of the aforementioned goons to collect your fantasy football payments, but it’d probably come at a premium and who knows if you’d come away without a…

My favorite football video game as a kid was the mental headlock, 10-yard Fight. I was nine when it was released, which gifted me with a suitable lack of expectation and a necessary amount of patience to enjoy such a limited game. But then again, 10-yard Fight moved video gamers beyond Atari’s raw pixilation and into, well, a slightly sharper variation of little blurry squares. The beauty of Fight—as anyone nostalgic about the original batch of Nintendo offerings will attest to—was its simplicity. No fancy intro featuring Kid Rock or Creed. No mistimed broadcasting on a loop.

  • Which Patriots Players Stand to Benefit from Logan Mankins Trade?

    28 Aug 2014 | 4:17 am
The New England Patriots locker room was filled with sadness in the wake of the trade that sent guard Logan Mankins to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As it turns out, the locker room is also full of at least a few players who stand to benefit from his departure. The trade, first reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, opened up plenty of cap space for future years that they can spend to keep some of their most important players in-house for years to come. Mankins was set to account for $10.5 million ag

As you might have noticed I took a pass on the preseason this year. The NFLX has enough variance to it as is, but the flag-happy experimentation was too much for me to get involved.  Since it involves twice as much time to handicap due to the expanded rosters and coaching motivations, it was better off to focus on the regular season.Week 1 is always the most interesting week for bettors since the lines have been out for months and most of the value has already been sucked out ... or has it? There is always under/overreaction to what takes place in the exhibition games and everyone has…

The 2013/2014 is officially in the books and the Seattle Seahawks take home the big prize. I certainly didn't expect a blowout, but it wasn't all that surprising either.Harvin provided huge plays, the defense did what it did all year, and the offense took advantage of the mismatches. I doubt that Seattle will be as healthy next post-season, but they have all the pieces to contend for the foreseeable future. It was great to end the year on a high note going 7-3-1 ATS in the playoffs (20-7-2 over the final 9 weeks). Most people think of a trade as one player for another straight up. This doesn’t work very often, nor is it a smart way to conduct a fair trade in the Fantasy Football world. If you want to preserve your credibility as a Fantasy Football team owner, then LISTEN UP! With Carolina losing their number one threat in Steve Smith to the Baltimore Ravens this off-season, they lost a veteran leader who Newton could look to in a key situation. Along, with the loss of Smith, the Panthers lost other receivers, notably Ted Ginn Jr, Brandon LaFell, and Domenik Hixon to other teams. However, the Panthers made some moves in order to bring in a new era for their offense. During free agency, Carolina was able to sign Jerricho Cotchery from the Steelers and Tiquan Underwood from the Bucs. With an effort to get younger, the Panthers took Kelvin Benjamin, the big…

The shift of power in the NFC now lies in the West, and one could argue that the North and South divisions also have an upper hand on the once powerful NFC East. However, this does not diminish the historic rivalries or bitter tension felt between every team in the East. And who says the East won’t bounce back soon, as just a few years ago the NFC West was considered the worst division in football. Here is how I expect the East to finish out this year 1. • The perils of betting first-year college quarterbacks

There's a reason why so many college football coaches have grey hair. When they lose their starting quarterback and return somebody with little to no experience, they have nothing but worries throughout the off-season.

  • The Land Grant Rant: Quick Thoughts On All 14 Big Ten Teams

    admin
    27 Aug 2014 | 11:34 am
You’ve read my predictions. You’ve heard my opinions — sure to be wrong. Now read my final thoughts on all 14 B1G teams before we commence the 2014-15 season. Purdue: What can I say about ya that hasn’t already been said? Joe Tiller isn’t coming back any time soon but he is living proof that, with the “right” guy, you could be at least decent. If Darrell Hazzell is that guy, we need to see a pulse this season. Rutgers: You brought us so many shiny things… Mostly things like scandals with coaches and very public firings and hirings of your athletic director. But you did…
  • The Michigan Minute: Breaking Down the 2014 Wolverines Football Schedule

    admin
    26 Aug 2014 | 6:53 am
Our resident Michigan homer James Needham has done a drive-by break down of each game the Wolverines will play in 2014, including his overall outlook on the season. Here is what he came up with: Home vs. Appalachian State: This is not the App State of a few years ago who stunned Michigan in the Big House. This is a team coming off a 4-8 season. Michigan should roll it up here and win by 24 points. 1-0 At Notre Dame: This is always a good game, but I’m feeling a good early win on the road to really get things going. I like Michigan in a close game 28-24. 2-0 Home vs. Miami of Ohio: This…

  • Braxton Miller’s Injury Impact On The Big Ten

    admin
    21 Aug 2014 | 7:51 am
In 2014, college football will have a playoff system in place for the 1st time ever. All of the “Power-5″ conferences in football will be trying to position themselves accordingly to get a shot at a national title. Heading into the year, Ohio State was picked by many to be the marquee team of the Big Ten. However, the recent season-ending injury to Braxton Miller will change the conference landscape quite a bit. Over the last few seasons, the Big Ten has really been hit hard by the national media for not playing well in big games. It is true that they have not been able to have a…

  • Patriots Agree to Trade Logan Mankins to Buccaneers

    Jason Fitzgerald
    26 Aug 2014 | 11:24 am
The Patriots are no stranger to surprising late summer roster moves and this year’s edition sees them moving long time Guard Logan Mankins to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Tim Wright and a draft pick.Mankins, our pick for worst contract on the Patriots over the last two seasons, signed a monster contract in 2011 that he had little chance to live up to. His contract remains the top valued contract among Guards and he is still a top five earner in cash salary, four years into the deal. He carried a $10.25 million cap charge in 2014 for the Patriots which was the 2nd highest in the NFL at…
  • The NFL Salary Cap and Super Bowl Champions Part II

    Jason Fitzgerald
    26 Aug 2014 | 9:51 am
In Part I of our look back at the salary cap spending of Super Bowl Champions we looked at spending on the top spots of the roster. In this one we want to look at the positional breakdowns of those top roster spots on the champions. Just as a quick reminder we are not including the 97 and 98 Broncos due to salary cap violations nor the 2010 Packers since the 2010 season had no salary cap. All figures are based on percent of the teams adjusted salary cap to adjust for the differences in salaries over the large time period.Top Player BreakdownI’m sure it comes as no surprise that quarterback…

Jason and I have discussed the possibility of having a fantasy football league for the staff with Over the Cap readers. We think there is some crossover between salary cap issues and fantasy football, so we could find a way to make some points along the season through fantasy football, but we also think it would be a fun experience. Please tweet @Jason_OTC or myself, @ZackMooreNFL, if you’re interested in joining the league! The post Over The Cap Fantasy Football League appeared first on Over the Cap.
  • Reviewing NFL Roster Cuts and Transactions for August 24

    Jason Fitzgerald
    24 Aug 2014 | 7:08 pm
Teams have until Tuesday to bring their rosters down to 75 players and a few teams have already made many of their decisions and begun the process of releasing players. Most of the moves that occur are not noteworthy but there are always a few surprising cuts to go along with some bad injury news for certain players. Lets go over the bigger news stories of the day.The St. Louis Rams announced that quarterback Sam Bradford suffered another ACL injury and would miss the entire 2014 NFL season. Bradford’s college and NFL career has been marred by injury and this would unfortunately look to…

Currently, I am not skilled in the technological know-how to put my podcasts on iTunes and such, but that will be done within the next few weeks. On Friday, I shared my thoughts on this article by Andrew Brandt: http://mmqb.si.com/2014/08/21/nfl-development-league/As someone who played with guys who were in the un-drafted free agency pool, trained with these kind of players at DeFranco’s Gym as well as clients that I’ve been involved with, I’ve seen first hand how much the…

  • Is Josh Gordon's Year-long suspension too much?

    Basilene Henson
    28 Aug 2014 | 12:11 am
Josh Gordon has been suspended for the entire 2014 NFL season. Gordon violated the league's substance abuse policy. He was also suspended for the first 2 games last season for similar reasons. Gordon is a talented wide receiver who led the league in reception yards last season with 1,646 yards. Personally, I think the suspension is too long. Maybe, 6 games would have been enough for this infraction. So, what do you think? **1) Was this penalty too steep?** **2) Do you think the NFL is wrong in barring Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns' facilities?** **3) Do you think the NFL should make…
  • Best Rookie Running Back this year?

    Keith Anderson
    28 Aug 2014 | 12:10 am
It seems like every year there are at least 1 or 2 rookie running backs that absolutely light up the league. Last year it was Eddie Lacy. The year before, Doug Martin and Alfred Morris. This year, there are plenty of backs in the right situation that can have similar success. Bishop Sankey (Titans), Terrence West (Browns), and Devonta Freeman (Falcons) have a very good chance to open the season as the starter. In addition, Dri Archer (Steelers) can take advantage of the fact that both LeGarrette Blount and LeVeon Bell are suspended for the season opener. Which rookie running back will have…
  • Is Jay Cutler a changed man?

    ella james
    27 Aug 2014 | 9:42 pm
Cutler whom is usually offish and a mild introvert has now begun to open up to the team. According to Chicago football report, Jay is now communicating with the entire roster to boost their momentum in the games. He's chatted with the linesman, running backs, and the receivers in an effort to get everyone on the same page. “We’ve absolutely noticed," offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said. "I think everyone in the building has noticed a difference in Jay. “None of us knew Jay very well before getting here last year and we worked through the year and that first year is always hard on…
  • NFL season: What are the biggest surprises of 2014/15?

    Mihir Pandya
    27 Aug 2014 | 9:32 pm
So I have been seeing a lot of previews and predictions of upcoming Football season and I didn't really see this topic so why not? What team/player will have a turn around season and have a huge impact on the league? Last year was filled with surprises! Andy Reid and the KC Chiefs go from a 2 win season to 10+ wins and making the playoffs. Cam Newton and Carolina making headlines and becoming one of the best teams in the NFC (mostly because of that defense.) Josh Gordon going from a pretty good WR to being the best in the league (with like 4 different QBs.) Peyton Manning came back from the…
  • From Contact Drills to Contact Highs, Suspensions on the Rise

    Steve Ausburne
    27 Aug 2014 | 10:09 am
Pete Carroll and Co. in Seattle will face suspensions for violating the CBA agreement of non-contact drills by allowing excessive contact during practice. It looks like the punishment will be a cancelling of a couple of practices in 2015. Meanwhile, Josh Gordon's violation of the NFL drug policy will end up resulting in a full season suspension after all. So much has been written about the Ray Rice incident and the myriad other infractions that the NFL has unleashed punishment upon - but let's discuss the overall big picture of the Goodell administration and discipline. Goodell seems to want…

  • Red Sox Trade John Lester To Oakland For Cespedes

    Robert Hyland
    31 Jul 2014 | 8:28 am
http://nepatstalk.com Reports have surfaced via CBS sports that the Boston Red Sox have traded ace Jon Lester along with Jonny Gomes to the Oakland Athletics in return for the big swinging left fielder Yoenis Cespedes and a draft pick. The reports bring an end to the rumors swirling that Boston would be trading Lester after contract negotiations run south. The deal makes sense for both teams with Lester going to the presumed championship contending A’s where his stellar postseason track record could be lengthened. Cespedes on the other hand will arrive in Boston as the team hopes to…
  • Jake Peavy Traded To The Giants: An A+ Deal

    Robert Hyland
    27 Jul 2014 | 8:27 am
http://nepatstalk.com (Photo By: SD Kirk) When the Boston Red Sox acquired Jake Peavy last season on their way to a World Series victory he proved a more than capable pitcher and a great competitor. Fast forward one calendar year from his arrival to Boston and Peavy is the second on a growing list of veterans who became roster casualties. With Jake Peavy traded to the Giants out in San Fransisco I have to say it is a great deal that has Boston headed in the right direction  and here’s why. Lack Of Performance – Most People in Boston enjoyed the first season Peavy was with the…
  • Don’t Call It A Red Sox Comeback… Seriously Don’t

    Robert Hyland
    26 Jul 2014 | 7:18 am
http://nepatstalk.com (Photo By: Keith Allison) The Boston Red Sox exited the All-Star break with a fresh approach to the season. With AJ Pierzynski ……. gone and Jon Lester’s contract negotiations held off until the end of the season the team began to right the ship with what looked like a good old fashion Red Sox comeback in the second half of the season. Unfortunately for Boston the illustrious comeback for the Sox lasted all of 4 games. Upon winning the initial four games after the break in convincing fashion and with a resurgence of David Ortiz the team has now lost…

  • NFL Preseason—Three Things to Watch For During Week Two.

    LukeHB
    14 Aug 2014 | 7:22 am
#453439330 / gettyimages.com The NFL Preseason is underway, with one week already in the books. For most teams, Week One is a game of little to no significance. Position battles are far from settled, starters play a virtually non-existent role, and results are often meaningless. But with just 3 weeks until the regular season kicks off with the Packers and Seahawks in Seattle on September 4th, each passing game has more and more significance. Here are Three things to watch during week two of the preseason. Quarterback battles heating up across the league. More often than not, there are rarely…
  • NFL “Offensive Language” Crackdown Hypocritical If Redskins Keep Name.

    LukeHB
    30 Jul 2014 | 3:27 am
#450825988 / gettyimages.com The NFL Competition Committee have spoken—in 2015 officials have been instructed to take an uncompromising stance on offensive, threatening and derogatory language. However, while derogatory language is being punished on-field, the move stinks of hypocrisy while off-field the league refuses force the Washington Redskins to change their racially insensitive name. It is not a new rule, but in light of the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal, and the entrance of Michael Sam—the first openly gay NFL player—into the league, it is no surprise that this become a…
  • Chatter Suggests NFL Will Have London Franchise Before Decades End.

    LukeHB
    18 Jul 2014 | 3:17 am
#452219036 / gettyimages.com In recent weeks, the NFL has grown more and more vocal about the prospect of a London franchise. Players, owners and league officials have for some time been dropping hints that a permanent team in London is very much part of the NFL’s long term growth plans. However the rhetoric is certainly ramping up as marquee players like Maurice Jones-Drew and Matt Schaub and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft have made some of the most telling statements yet about the prospect. Last week, Oakland Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew and quarterback Matt…
  • Do the Seattle Seahawks Own the NFL’s Best Secondary?

    LukeHB
    18 Jun 2014 | 8:04 am
#464399449 / gettyimages.com Ask the average NFL fan, and this question seems like a real no-brainer. Of course, would be the obvious answer. In a recent ranking of the Top Five Secondaries in the NFL, Mike Tanier of Sports on Earth put it this way. “The Seahawks ranked first. Go ahead and argue otherwise, once you are finished posting to your Flat Earth message board.” Seemingly, there is no reason even to debate this. He made no argument for this position. There is no need for discussion, no need to question, it’s simply a fact. Yet, debate we must. Tanier made a case…
  • NFL Draft 2014: Winners and Losers from First Round

    LukeHB
    9 May 2014 | 4:25 am
#488845697 / gettyimages.com The NFL Draft is officially underway, and as always, day one was full of surprises, shocks, steals, and head-scratchers. Who were the winners and losers of the first round? Let’s take a look Honorary Mentions Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney (1st Overall). Clowney is a home run hit, without a doubt. Though there were options available, including trading back for Khalil Mack, Clowney is a franchise guy right out of the gate. He is both huge, and quick, a rare combination in defensive ends. He was, in my opinion the best player in the draft, and went right…

  • Detroit Lions Waive Jacob Maxwell And Bryce Quigley

    Vince Vielhaber
    26 Aug 2014 | 10:05 am
The Detroit Lions waived tight end Jacob Maxwell and offensive lineman Bryce Quigley.  Two moves were expected due to yesterday’s roster claims.  These two moves get the team back to 75 players in time for today’s deadline.  Quigley’s release was announced by team reporter Tim Twentyman.  Maxwell’s was discovered by reporters when they entered the locker room and saw his nameplate was gone from his locker.  While the team has not yet confirmed Maxwell’s departure, it is safe to say it has happened.
  • Detroit Lions Claim Michael Egnew and Emil Igwenagu

    Vince Vielhaber
    25 Aug 2014 | 2:21 pm
The Detroit Lions, who earlier today got to the 75 player limit, claimed Michael Egnew from the Dolphins and Emil Igwenagu from the Eagles.  Egnew is a tight end and Igwenagu will play fullback.  Both players are practice squad eligible so it is likely they just want to look at them prior to making practice squad decisions.  Either way, now the Lions have to let two players go before Tuesday at 4pm.  It will be interesting to see who they intend to release at this point.  They are now at 77 players. Also, outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy is battling an undisclosed injury.  Some speculate…
  • Detroit Lions Make Several Roster Moves

    Vince Vielhaber
    25 Aug 2014 | 9:48 am
The Detroit Lions made a few more roster cuts today, waiving punter Drew Butler, quarterback James Franklin, and kicker Giorgio Tavecchio.  The release of Butler was not much of a surprise as Sam Martin is the team’s starting punter.  Butler was never going to make the team, but he did do a good job of advertising his skills for prospective teams. James Franklin’s release was also not much of a surprise.  The Lions likely will not keep more than 2 quarterbacks, although they could possibly keep three.  Franklin never saw game action and was the odd man out in practices.  He…
  • Detroit Lions Waive Six Place TJ Jones on PUP List

    Vince Vielhaber
    23 Aug 2014 | 1:09 pm
The Detroit Lions made their first moves toward getting down to 75 by Tuesday.  Today, they put TJ Jones on the PUP list, meaning that he will not count against the 53 until at least week six if they choose to activate him.    They could do what they did with Chris Greenwood and put him on IR if they do not feel he is ready after week 6.  They could also be thin at receiver by then and need to activate him.  Either way, this was a move that we all expected.  Jones has not participated since the beginning of camp when he landed wrong on his shoulder. The Lions also waived six players…
  • Preseason Recap Week 3 Detroit Lions Vs Jacksonville Jaguars

    Vince Vielhaber
    22 Aug 2014 | 9:33 pm
In week three of the preseason, the Detroit Lions beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 13-12.  As always, the final score was not important as it is just preseason.  This game however was a big one for most teams as they usually game plan their opponent and play their starters longer.  For Detroit, that was the plan.  The game was a disaster though for a team as talented as the Detroit Lions.  There were several things that they wanted to accomplish and unfortunately they did the opposite.  They stressed needing to improve Matthew Stafford’s game.  Instead, he started the game 1-5 with…

  • 10 lessons from the Little League World Series

    25 Aug 2014 | 10:42 am
As a kid, I dreamed of playing in the Little League World Series (LLWS). In terms of the sports calendar, it was the last hoorah before the start of school. I always wondered why St. Louis never had a Little League World Series team. Were we not good enough? After all, St. Louis IS a baseball town, right?Sure, we are. It's just that St. Louis youth baseball leagues are not affiliated with Little League Baseball, Inc. You know, the real Little League. It's not called Little League because of the size of the kids. That's really the name of the organization. The world has been a very turbulent…
  • Record participation in Coach It Right! Soccer Clinics

    18 Aug 2014 | 11:37 am
Last Wednesday, the Sports Commission wrapped up its Coach It Right! Soccer Clinics for the year. A clinic record 120 youth soccer coaches turned out to be taught by the man himself -- Missouri Youth Soccer Association state coaching director Denny Vaninger. All tolled, more than 250 coaches participated in the three clinics held at St, Alban Roe, Sts. Joachim & Ann and St. Louis University High School. By our calculations, this means that about 4,000 St. Louis area children will have a more positive soccer experience this season due to to the dedication of their coaches. We certainly…
  • Hammon hiring makes history...but it shouldn't

    8 Aug 2014 | 9:45 am
The San Antonio Spurs made history this week when the team hired retiring WNBA legend Becky Hammon as an assistant coach. She became the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in a major men's professional sports league in the United States. It's a big deal, but it shouldn't be. Here's the question I've heard and read all week on social media and sports talk radio:Will men listen to a woman?Sports seems to be this alternate universe where men are asexual beings born of, developed by only other men. Coaches are teachers. Specifically, coaches teach sports. In America, 87% of teachers are…
  • Coaches show great appreciation for Coach It Right!

    4 Aug 2014 | 8:57 am
I probably overuse the words 'great' and 'tremendous' on this blog, but the response to last week's Coach It Right! Soccer Clinic at St. Alban Roe in Wildwood has been both great and tremendous. The 70 coaches who came out were great sports. They showed a tremendous commitment to the kids they coach by learning from the very best.Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) state coaching director Denny Vaninger led a clinic focused specifically on coaching kids and what adults can do to make sure kids have fun while learning the beautiful game. The video below shows Denny taking some volunteers…
  • NFL meets with teams about sportsmanship

    31 Jul 2014 | 10:29 am
The NFL is taking the bullying and hazing debacle that went on in Miami last season very seriously. League officials will visit the training camps of all 32 franchises to address sportsmanship on the field and expectations relative to workplace conduct. Check out this link to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch story about this week's visit to St. Louis Rams training camp.To be clear, the league is visiting all 32 teams. The Rams are not being specifically targeted for any infractions. The Post-Dispatch story is highlighted because of the interest of this blog's readership and the thoroughness of the…
