  • [Raiders News] Raiders Coach Dennis Allen Talking To Emmitt Thomas About Defensive Coordinator

    SteveRobWhatever
    27 Jan 2012 | 9:23 pm
Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie said newly hired head coach Dennis Allen will be allowed to pick his coaching staff, whereas Al Davis used to select many of the assistant coaches. The first name on Allen’s list appears to be Chiefs’ defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas, who is talking with the Raiders about their defensive coordinator position, a league source said. Thomas, 68, is a Hall of Fame cornerback who was a defensive coordinator for the Eagles, Packers and Vikings from 1995-2001. He was Allen’s mentor when both were on the Falcons’ staff from 2002-05. Thomas has spent the last two…

Williams said that while team doctors have assured him that nothing is broken, wearing the boot is more of a precautionary measure. “Right now, I’m just resting for a couple of days,” Williams said today. “But I’ll be running on it and just seeing what I can do the next couple of days.” The injury news comes after Williams arguably had the biggest play of the game against the 49ers, when he dislodged the ball from San Francisco…

The way Buffalo Bills General Manager Buddy Nix phrased it during his season-ending press conference, it sounded like the organization is very interested in bringing wide receiver Stevie Johnson back for next season at least. Johnson, a soon-to-be unrestricted free agent as of March 13, has often stated that he wants to be back in Buffalo next season. On January 9, Nix had been asked if it was their intention to re-open contract talks with Johnson and his agent, C.J. Laboy, in the next few weeks. This is what the GM said: "There were proposals made during the season. The last one we made…

The Bears will name either Emery or New England Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht to succeed Jerry Angelo, who was fired by team president Ted Phillips last month. • Bears’ general manager will have hands full

    27 Jan 2012 | 8:34 pm
Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery still is considered the favorite to succeed Jerry Angelo as the Bears’ general manager. But whether it’s Emery or Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht, the winner will have a heavy workload the minute he signs his contract. Though coach Lovie Smith is an untouchable and the core of the Bears’ roster for 2012 is intact, hiring a general manager in the middle of the evaluation period for the draft and free agency puts the Bears in catch-up mode. But there’s more to it than that. When player evaluation and poor draft …
  • Bears need wideouts, but they can be hard to project

    26 Jan 2012 | 2:19 am
MOBILE, Ala. — I have no idea if Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick has soft hands or an exceptional ‘‘get-off.’’ I don’t know if he’s sudden in and out of his breaks or whether he’s a long-strider with a wide catching radius or a burner who accelerates toward space and has high-end speed. He’s 6-5, 220, claims he has a 39-inch vertical, says he’ll run a 4.4 40 — and he can catch the ball and run with it. That makes him a candidate to help the Bears. Quick isn’t the best wide receiver at the Senior Bowl. He’s …

MOBILE, Ala. — Scott Pioli, who helped build the New England Patriots’ dynasty with coach Bill Belichick, takes a low-key approach as the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. But when asked Tuesday to talk about Chiefs college scouting director Phil Emery, Pioli gladly agreed to an interview at the Senior Bowl — with one condition. He wanted time to think about his answers because of his respect for Emery. “The things that stand out are his work ethic, his work habits, how detailed he is, how meticulous he is,” Pioli told the Sun-Times. “He’s a very good teacher, …

    Why Football Is Cool

  • Audibles: Manning and his future

    27 Jan 2012 | 2:36 am
So I'm introducing a new segment this week called "Audibles", where I post some worthwhile commentary from other blogs.First up, Yahoo's Shutdown Corner ran a good piece today summarizing the agitated relationship between Colts owner Jim Irsay and quarterback Peyton Manning, with Irsay choosing the path of most resistance. Simply, Irsay places the "horseshoe" ahead of the player.Enough quips have been made about Irsay's fashion sense so I won't try and articulate how he clearly places the pinstripe ahead of common sense. However, I will say that this kind of statement, whether you…
  • NFL chirpy about tweeting

As the 24-hour news cycle churns through empty injury reports, mundane coaching signings and Tim Tebow's golfing schedule, one story stood out to me: the announcement that the NFL is allowing players to tweet during the Pro Bowl. Stop the press! Whoever thought such a commitment - one that has little to do with the clanging of helmets on the field - would stir so much web ink? Further still, who might have anything constructive to say after said clanging? Some valid points have already been raised about the insincerity and oddity of players tweeting during a pro football game, especially on…
  • Rex: Not sexy option, but...

    25 Jan 2012 | 10:10 pm
A recent post on Larry Brown Sports sets Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman straight, which is something the blogging world and media generally needs more of. The trouble is that Rex, being Rex, has a false sense of confidence due to his arm strength, which remains true. He can indeed zip it, and has done so in big games, particularly to opponents who revel in receiving his wayward deliveries. Can the Skins really continue with Rex? It seems they will, at least in a secondary role. Though judging from some of the comments on Hog Haven this month, fans aren't thrilled with Grossman's 20…
  • NY Giants: bigger and bluer, in the end

    25 Jan 2012 | 12:19 am
It began in sections, like the disjointed parts of a Picasso painting: angled, rounded and unusually colored. We were ushered into the NFC Championship with a rousing anthem and then drawn closer through a clouded lens. The darkened sky, sullen with gray water, rapidly descended upon Candlestick and the event became challenging, beyond its fundamental conflict, that is. The ball, soaked and looking more like a stone, suddenly slipped on the pass and bobbled on the carry. And with the game tied at seven early in the second stanza, who might have predicted the outcome of this title bout with…

After every head coaching position had been filled, it is a lock that long-time offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will be returning to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2012 season. Mornhinweg was a name being tossed around for nearly every head coaching vacancy, and he actually did interview with the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. However, both organizations went in another direction and hired another coach, leaving Mornhinweg to stay with the Eagles. This will be a good offense versus a good defense. Victor Cruz and Hakeen Nicks will be the people to watch from the Giants. Grownkowski, Woodhead, and Green-Ellis will be the people to watch from the Patriots. This will be the end of a great NFL season.

  • ♠ Falcons VS Giants ♠

    Mike Crosby
    5 Jan 2012 | 11:04 am
The Atlanta Falcons are playing the New York Giants for the right to play in the next round of the playoffs. The Giants are good both offensively and defensively, but the Falcons are better. If the Falcons Win this game it will be easy going into the playoffs.
  • ♠9-5 Falcons♠

    Mike Crosby
    19 Dec 2011 | 8:50 am
The Falcons are 9-5 coming of a win Thursday night. The defense stepped up with their top players plagued with injuries. The offense also stepped up and synced. The game showed that the Falcons have what it takes to compete in the NFL. Their next game is the rematch against the Saints leading their division. I have confidence the Falcons will win.
  • ♠ Here We Come Jacksonville Jaguars ♠

    Mike Crosby
    12 Dec 2011 | 10:46 am
The Falcons rally back from a 23 - 7 deficit against Cam Newton and the Panthers to win it 31 - 23 after halftime. This Thursday the Falcons will be taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars in another must win game to keep up with the Saints and stay in the running for the playoffs. My favorite rookie Jacquizz Rodgers finally gets him a nfl touchdown. Julio Jones another rookie grabs to more. The Jaguars also played a good game sunday to beat the Buccaneers 41-14. This Thursday will show who has more determination the Falcons or the Jaguars.

    28 Jan 2012 | 4:18 am
The Senior Bowl has long been a showcase for mid-level NFL talent before the draft, and in 2012, there are plenty of players who will try to prove themselves one last time before the NFL draft. In 2012, there are plenty of unproven quarterbacks who are fighting for the spot as the third-best quarterback in the draft to go along with quite a few disappointing players who need to rebuild their image and make a better name for themselves tomorrow. Here's a look at some of those players and more.Begin

    26 Nov 2011 | 10:32 am
A couple of years back, during our Super Bowl winning campaign, I used to flippantly joke that David Thomas was a future Hall of Famer. I did this from a sense of Saints luxury. Drew Brees seemed to have so many weapons at his disposal that anytime the ball made its way to Thomas I felt the guy needed an honorary beef up so marginalised was he from recognition. Well now that same sense of

    Carl Conrad
    27 Jan 2012 | 10:06 am
As the Social Media craze continues, the NFL is trying to capitalize and engage an already enormous audience via yet another method.  The league has ruled that it will allow players to use Twitter at the Pro Bowl.  This may very well be an attempt by the league executives to regain some interest in an exercise that is widely mocked and ridiculed.  While getting voted to the Pro Bowl is certainly an honor, it is by no means a game in which anyone that is participating goes all out.  Players are happy with the paycheck they get and the vacation to Hawaii, but subsequently do everything in…

Celek was a passenger in a car that crashed into a highway off-ramp at Packer Avenue, near the team’s stadium, at approximately 2:30 a.m. last night. The driver was driving too fast when he spun out and hit a concrete barrier. The driver, Sean Glynn, failed sobriety testing and was arrested on DUI charges. Seeing as how the talented tight end turned 27 Wednesday evening, one can only speculate that he was returning home from the evening’s celebration.  Celek released a statement through the organization that he did not know the driver of the vehicle…

Cullen Jenkins going with the Mr. T look Several media outlets have been toying with the notion that the Green Bay Packers are interested in bringing back Cullen Jenkins, who was among the 2011 Eagles free-agent class that was supposed to bring the Lombardi Trophy to the City of Brotherly Love.  This move would make perfect sense for the Packers, considering Jenkins’ stellar play this year; but that is the same reason it would be moronic for Philadelphia to entertain the offer despite his $25 million contract and $5 million roster bonus that is due in March. New York Jets special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff has decided to forgo retirement for one more season and return to the New York Jets in 2012. Westhoff, who is regarded as one of the most innovative special teams coaches in the game, has coached 29 seasons in the NFL. Apparently he’s about ready to make that an even 30 before he calls it quits. DeGuglielmo spent the last three seasons working under new Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano when he was the head man in Miami, and he did a pretty good job over there. The Dolphins running game gained 1,987 yards in 2011, and the offensive line propelled Reggie Bush’s to his first career 1,000-yard season. Prior to his stint in Miami, DeGuglielmo was an assistant offensive line…
