  • TPF Fives: Week 8 Rankings

    Michael Beaudwin
    30 Oct 2014 | 9:40 am
Week 8. Halfway through the year and what have we learned? Washington beat Dallas, and Philadelphia beat Washington, but San Francisco beat both Philly and Dallas and Arizona won against San Fran. That makes the Cardinals and San Fran the top two teams in the NFC, right? Not exactly. How does it affect the rankings though? A few teams shifted around and the Cards are one of the top teams, but all we’ve really learned is the NFL is still as unpredictable as ever.  The Top Five #1. Denver Broncos [6-1] Right now, at the time of this writing, the Broncos are the team you have the most…

The ship has sailed on Washington Redskins’ quarterback Kirk Cousins. Once an overrated commodity in the offseason the Redskins were unable to pull the trigger on a trade and will now suffer. The Redskins’ backup quarterback drew interest from a number of teams during the 2014 NFL Draft, but none of them interested general manager Bruce Allen. One interested party, the Cleveland Browns, offered a fourth round pick during the draft according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. The Redskins were reportedly looking for a second-round selection or an allpro NFL selection. Things…

    GB Bongiovanni
    24 Oct 2014 | 10:58 am
Despite the news you hear, it’s not the record-breaking performances, stats, or winning records that Peyton Manning’s legacy should be judged on. What makes Peyton Manning the greatest quarterback ever to play in the NFL are the little things. Things that not every fan may notice. To many, it’s his accomplishments they will focus on and the upcoming records he could break. Odds are the allpro will break these records in only a matter of time. Manning is now under 5,000 yards, 1,500 pass attempts, and 600 completions short of Brett Favre for all-time passing records.

Those are teams that are hovering near the top or sinking towards the bottom. Take a look in this week’s TPF Fives. The Top Five #1. Denver Broncos [5-1] Denver has been on a mission since February 3, 2014. That mission: return to the Super Bowl. There is a strong chance this Denver team completes that mission. I do not think there was a single person come Sunday night that expected Brett Favre to remain in possession of the career touchdown pass record at game’s end. I have always liked Peyton Manning as a person and as a quarterback, and that is how I will talk about him: as a person, and as a quarterback. Manning is not an unstoppable captain of a team prepared to steamroll the remainder of their opponents. He is one of the best quarterbacks ever, yes, but even his latest achievement does not make him the greatest of all time. Using one word for each of his touchdowns, here’s…

    Bobby Brooks
    31 Oct 2014 | 2:32 pm
San Diego Chargers Vs. Miami Dolphins: SD +2.5 (Pinnacle)Market WatchThis is an interesting point spread. Last week this game was listed as a "pick em" in the Westgate look-ahead. When it reopened it had moved to -2.5 in favor of Miami. Why? I have no earthly idea, but I think they had it right the first time. If anything, the Chargers should be favored between these two, and I won't be shocked if we see a line move in that direction on the weekend. A massive 81% of the bets are on San Diego as well.Bottom LineWho covers: Chargers Vs. DolphinsI like the Chargers this week for a numbers of…

Arizona Cardinals Vs. Dallas Cowboys: ARI +3.5 (-115) (Pinnacle)Market WatchDespite all the injuries that occurred in the Cowboys Week 8 game, there hasn't been much movement in this line. In the look-ahead Dallas was favored by -3.5. When it got put back on the board today it was at -3.25. You have the option of grabbing the home team at -3 for -115, or the dog at +3.5 for the same price. The line hasn't been out long, but 80% of the tickets are coming in on the Cards.Bottom LineWho covers: Cardinals or Cowboys?Simply put, this is a bad matchup for the Dallas offense. Romo hasn't practiced…

Week 8 is wrapped up and favorites led the way so far going 8-7 ATS. They now go up 61-57-2 on the season. It sounds like a broken record, but Football Outsiders still hasn't turned things around as they go 7-8 ATS, and now sit 49-67-5 on the year. The Las Vegas SuperContest top 5 consensus picks went 3-2, and have a pretty good record on the year at 23-17.Joe Fornegay's "pros" went 2-4 ATS (18-25-1 YTD), and the "joes" finished 3-5 (26-24-2 YTD).  It was a similiar story for Todd Furhman's "pros" as they finished 3-4 ATS (24-23-2 YTD), and the "joes" went 2-2 ATS (19-19-2 YTD).I didn't…

    Bobby Brooks
    28 Oct 2014 | 1:07 pm
Baltimore Ravens Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: BAL PK (Pinnacle)Market WatchIn Week 8 I was on the Colts -3 and felt really good about it. I clearly wasn't the only one because money poured in on them all week up until kickoff, and the line finally closed at -4.5. That line move wasn't just an endorsement of Indy, but it was just as much a disrespectful fade of the Steelers. So now that Big Ben put up one of the best games in recent memory, has the general consensus shifted on Pittsburgh? Not if you look at the early line movement for Week 9. In the look-ahead the Steelers were listed as -1 point…

Denver Broncos Vs. New England Patriots: DEN -3 (Pinnacle)Market WatchThere's not much to report for this spread. It was -3 in the look-ahead line, it reopened at the same number after Week 8, and it still sits there now as I'm writing this. In my opinion, I think this line needs to be -3.5 or higher, but given how big this game is I'm not surprised it's at the current number. Betting is pretty much split with 51% of the early wagers coming in on Denver.Bottom LineWho covers: Broncos or Patriots? This is clearly the biggest matchup of the week, and there is going to be more analysis…

In the new NFL, quarterbacks reign supreme. They have always been a huge part of the team, but with today’s rules, the quarterback is more important than ever. No longer can you win with a mediocre, game manager. In past years we saw guys like Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson and even Rex Grossman make it to and win Super Bowls. Those days are long gone. If we look at the last few champions since the rule changes that make it nearly impossible for a defense to touch the wide receiver, we will see a trend that is not going to be changing anytime soon, if at all. Here’s a list of the last 10…

Week nine is a crucial time in fantasy football. It’s the point in the season where you’re in one of three positions. • The Michigan Minute: The Wolverines Continue Their Train Wreck Of A Season

    admin
    30 Oct 2014 | 12:34 pm
Sometimes when a season is turning into a train wreck, an elite coach — like a top 15 coach — gets his players together and they circle the wagons to try and fix things. They might not win, but they at least find things to work on and start building for next year. Then there are the train wreck seasons for a coach that is in over his head, where things go from bad to worse. For Michigan, this season is turning into the latter. As a coach, one can’t let his players bring a spike to a visiting team’s home field — a field that has not been won on since 2007. How silly can…
  • Could The SEC Be Shut Out Of The College Football Playoff?

    30 Oct 2014 | 8:51 am
Our resident Michigan homer gives his thoughts on the first College Football Playoff Rankings and explains a scenario that could leave the Southeasten Conference out of the the four team tournament. As a Big Ten Fan, what did the release of the first ever playoff rankings Tuesday night mean to you?  I can tell you what it should mean: Nothing!!!  I’m sure all the college football fans outside of the SEC were up in arms the next day after seeing five SEC teams in the top 11 spots, but don’t worry Big Ten nation — that is going to change in a big way starting this weekend.

  • Rams Restructure Contract of Jared Cook for Cap Relief

    Jason Fitzgerald
    31 Oct 2014 | 5:07 am
I had speculated the other day that the Rams needed to restructure a contract in order to execute the trade for safety Mark Barron and as it turns out the Rams did just that. According to Brian McIntyre, the Rams tweaked the contract of tight end Jared Cook this time around to comply with salary cap restrictions. To fit Mark Barron & Co under the cap, Rams converted portion of Jared Cook’s base salary to a signing bonus. Created ~$900k in cap space— Brian McIntyre (@brian_mcintyre) October 30, 2014In the restructure it seems that the Rams reduced Cook’s P5 from $3 million to the…

    Jason Fitzgerald
    30 Oct 2014 | 2:10 pm
I finished last week with a 9-6 record straight up and 8-7 record against the spread. My yearly record now stands at 80-40-1 and 70-48-3.Saints (-3) over PANTHERS- While I dislike taking the Saints on the road, I just don’t see a way for the Panthers to compete on offense with New Orleans. Saints games are often going to resemble something of a shootout and its nearly impssible for the Panthers to win that kind of game. The short week should also work in the favor of the Saints who are more experienced in these situations and much better coached. Carolina should put up some points this…

The Cardinals jumped to number 7, while the Seahawks dropped to 8. I cant recall the last time Seattle did not come out as a top 5 team in these rankings. Sometime back in 2012 I’d guess and one more poor week and I think its time to start being concerned. On the low end of the rankings, the Buccaneers are proving to be the worst team in some time. There is nothing they do well and its against a pretty easy schedule. Jacksonville and St. Louis are the other teams trending really bad. The Raiders have actually played a bit better than the record would indicate but they have a very difficult…

  • Which would you rather? (NFL Edition)

    Alex Hoegler
    31 Oct 2014 | 2:35 pm
**Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson?** Luck has been the best statistical quarterback of the 2012 draft class, but Russell Wilson is 4-1 in playoff games against Luck's 1-2 record. Wilson of course has a Super Bowl too. Many need to keep in mind Wilson is playing on a team with the league's most dominant defense in years. Luck was forced to take over a completely rebuilt team that went 2-14 the year prior. Luck has 11 career 4th quarter game-winning drives. Luck has 10,927 yards and 68 touchdowns. Wilson has 7,965 yards and 63 touchdowns. **My Verdict:** Luck. He'd have a title if he had Wilson's…
  • Clock is Ticking on Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

    Jeremy Bannerman
    31 Oct 2014 | 2:02 pm
For the last four years, Cam Newton has been the starting quarterback and too many times, the scapegoat of the Carolina Panthers. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it's time for the team to make a decision: quarterback or head coach? In his rookie season, Newton was saddled with the league’s 27th ranked scoring defense and the 28th ranked defense in total yards, a defense led by former defensive coordinator and Carolina Panther head coach Ron Rivera. And considering the Panthers were coming off a 2-14 season the year before, a record which landed them the 2010…
  • DeMarco Murray: How He Can Run the Cowboys off the Rails

    Chris Jalil
    30 Oct 2014 | 6:30 pm
Through eight weeks of football, DeMarco Murray has piled up 1,054 yards and 7 touchdowns. Dallas’ fourth-year running back is also on pace to challenge Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record behind an offensive line that even makes second stringer Joseph Randle look unstoppable. The Dallas Cowboys are 6-2 and they’ve beaten contenders like Seattle and New Orleans to get there. So what’s the problem? Well, Murray – who has proven to be an injury waiting to happen in his last three years in the NFL – is on pace to carry the ball 412 times, which would be the second most…
  • Biggest NFL Rivalry since the '99-'00 season?

    Eric Von
    30 Oct 2014 | 3:24 pm
The recent Monday Night football game between the Redskins and Cowboys had me wondering who has been the best rivalry in professional football since the '99-'00 season. I narrowed down the rivalry to the year 2000 for the fact many rivalries (Packers/Bears) have been around a lot longer than others (Ravens/Steelers) so it would be hard to compare and contrast. I realize there are many great rivalries all over the NFL. Jets/Patriots, Cowboys/Redskins, Bears/Packers etc. Now, I believe the Steelers and Ravens possess the biggest rivalry since 2000. Both have 2 Super Bowl victories since the…

Most Valuable Player: Peyton Manning Do you remember when Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls and he was clearly the best player in the league but people got tired of giving him the award so Charles Barkley got a shot? The only way Manning doesn't win the award this year is if voters wants to give someone else the award. He has 22 touchdown which is tied for the NFL lead with Andrew Luck who has played 1 more game. He has only 3 Ints and is on pace to have 51 touchdown this season. It would be hard not to give him the award even with Demarcco Murray doing what he's doing because he…

The NFL trade deadline is just a few days away, yet there seems to be very little activity taking place. For fans of the Premier League, the weeks leading up to the close of the transfer window mark some of the most interesting and exciting of the whole season, so many English NFL fans are surprised to discover that the trade deadline in the NFL is nowhere near as exciting or fraught with activity. We take a look at why this is, and seek to understand trading in the NFL a little better. What is the NFL trade deadline? The NFL Trade deadline is the final date at which NFL Teams can directly…

    20 Oct 2014 | 4:13 am
#457523484 / gettyimages.com Few would question calling Peyton Manning the greatest quarterback of his generation, perhaps all time, and with his fourth touchdown in Sunday Night’s rout of the San Francisco 49ers, continued his quest to make it official, topping Brett Favre’s all time touchdown record. Manning achieved the milestone—509 touchdowns to pass Favre, adding a 510th soon therafter—in 56 fewer games, and over 3 fewer seasons than Favre, and looks set to increase that number significantly, as part of one of the most potent offensive groups of all time. Just 2 weeks…

#455557383 / gettyimages.com The first six weeks of the NFL season are in the books, and already some stats are beginning to emerge. One of the most surprising, however, is that the Arizona Cardinals entered their game against the Oakland Raiders as the only team without an Interception, in spite of three different QBs splitting time under centre. And although the Cardinals finally threw their first pick during this game, we take a look at this curious anomaly. If, prior to the season, I had told you that after 5 games, a team would still be without an interception, you would perhaps not have…

#186033709 / gettyimages.com By now, it will come as no surprise to anyone to learn that the NFL wants a franchise in London. And what a big, international sports and media conglomerate wants, it usually gets. Now, the FA has admitted it would be willing to travel around the country for its home games, essentially freeing up Wembley Stadium to host a full season of gridiron football. Though the NFL has been clear in its message—there will be a permanent franchise based in the UK—one of the major concerns for the league, fans and any potential ownership group has been where the franchise…

With the English Premier League considering adopting a similar rule to the NFL’s “Rooney Rule”, we take a look at what it is, how it works and what it has meant for the NFL as a whole. What is the Rooney Rule? Put simply, the Rooney Rule is a requirement that for every head coaching and other senior football operations (eg, General Manager) position, at least one black, or other minority, candidate is interviewed. It is a form of affirmative action—sometimes called “positive discrimination”—aimed to tackle a perceived underrepresentation of a certain group in…

  • New York Giants Sign CB Mike Harris Off Lions Practice Squad

    Vince Vielhaber
    29 Oct 2014 | 6:41 am
The New York Giants have signed corner Mike Harris off the Detroit Lions practice squad.  Tim Twentyman , the team reporter, was the first to break the news.  Harris was only with the team for three weeks, but the team liked what he was able to do.  According to Twentyman, the team wanted to sign him to the active roster but did not have enough room so they had to let him go to New York.  The move leaves a hole in the practice squad that will likely be filled sometime this week.  The Lions have a few moves they will need to make in the coming week but with them having the bye week, there…

    26 Oct 2014 | 1:49 pm
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley, who is having a career year this year, left the game Sunday morning against the Atlanta Falcons due to a right knee injury.  The injury occurred in the second quarter of the game when he collided with Ndamukong Suh while pressuring Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.  Fairley immediately grabbed his knee and was eventually helped off the field.  Once on the sidelines, the medical staff decided to end his day as he could not put much weight on the right leg.  He was placed on a cart and taken back to the locker room.  There is early…

The Detroit Lions defeated the Atlanta Falcons in stunning fashion today 22-21 in London England.  The Lions started today’s game off real sloppy, allowing Matt Ryan to complete nearly every pass in route to an opening drive touchdown screen pass to Devonta Freeman.  Detroit proceeded to go three and out, punting the ball back to Atlanta.  The Falcons took advantage, driving down the field and capping it off with a 1 yard touchdown pass to tight end Bear Pascoe.  For a Detroit defense that had not allowed any first quarter points since playing against Green Bay in week 3, to let go…
