    Why Football Is Cool

  • Super Bowl: For The Love Of Everything But The Game

    JP
    28 Jan 2015 | 2:53 am
If you’ve just arrived from Neptune for Super Bowl 49, you could be forgiven for thinking it seems more like a Hollywood spectacle than a sporting event. Presuming you get all of Ryan Seacrest’s red carpet telecasts, that is.Over the past week, we’ve heard an inordinate amount about how footballs are inflated and how buoyant they actually should be, which is oddly akin to the sort of updates we receive from Kim Kardashian. She’s an expert on buoyancy, of course, and even traded on it for her new Super Bowl commercial for T-Mobile. Super Bowl ads, too, are more pervasive than Richard…

When square shouldered American footballers storm into London’s Wembley Stadium this weekend, 80,000 odd sports fans will hope for a spectacle. They’ll anticipate heroic quarterbacking, rampaging rushes and pulverising tackling. But just as it is for fans of an English club treading the waters of relegation, hope isn’t always nearly enough. In a historical context, they don’t come much mightier than the Raiders and Dolphins, who have five championship titles and rooms full of legends between them. Unfortunately, most of that success occurred in the 1970s, when roughhousing was as…
  • To Run Or Gun? The QB Quandry

    JP
    18 Sep 2014 | 3:47 am
The modern era of football has seen two opposing ideas worked into playbooks as if it were imperative they co-exist. I’m talking about attacking the defense with either a running quarterback or a passing one, which to outsiders might seem as trivial as casting a blonde or brunette Bond girl. Let’s just agree that both work.Of course, there’s no reason why a quarterback can’t be both, that is, an excellent runner who's also able to fire a 30-yard bullet between defenders arms, bobbing helmets and spittle. Seattle’s Russell Wilson might just be the best example of such a player,…

Dirty tissues, half a pack of Big Red and some loose change tumbled to the floor, but so too did an unpunched Super Bowl ticket. For all 32 teams, confidence remains high, until losses become consecutive. There's still a chance, albeit slim in some instances, of being on that ticket. It's a beautiful time of year to say the least.Wake up call for PatsIt's quite possible that Tom Brady exerted all of his energy celebrating that first touchdown pass to Gronk.

The “what’s wrong with Peyton Manning” question has been framed a variety of ways over the final month of the regular season, Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com reports. Manning battled a right thigh injury down the stretch — which he suffered Dec. 14 in San Diego — and over the final five games of the regular season, he had one 300-yard passing game, two games with fewer than 200 yards passing, five touchdowns and six interceptions for the Broncos. With Denver poised for Sunday’s AFC divisional round game against the Indianapolis Colts, Manning’s health and…

    11 Jan 2015 | 2:01 pm
Madden said “One knee equals two feet.” Three feet don’t equal a catch? Brutal: the job by the refs in the Dallas Green Bay game in the closing minutes. The play in question: a fourth-down pass to the two-yard line by Dallas’ Tony Romo to wide receiver Dez Bryant. Bryant secured the ball to his shoulder as he landed one foot, held the ball with his left as the second foot came down, then took a third step and a lunge for the end zone with his left arm outstretched. Part of the ball hit the ground, ran up the side of Bryant’s hand, into the air, where he…

A tenure of .500 teams during his tenure as the head man after he sent Jimmy Johnson packing in a fit of pique didn’t lend itself to all of that name-calling, maybe…but did lend itself to most of it.

Suh has been named to the Pro Bowl four times and as well been elected to the All-Pro team every season including First-Team four times. It is fair to mention that Suh has had his fair shares of lows to go with his highs. Suh has been fined a total of $286,875 by the NFL for multiple player-safety violations, and suspended once for two games; in week 17 of this season Suh was…

Favorites have actually won 8 of the 10 games straight up though. Unders are 5-4-1.Around town, Football Outsiders took both dogs, which left them at 1-1 ATS this week. It's a pretty big shift to go off a key number, especially in a game as high profile as this. It could go even lower, but I'm happy with anything under -7. So far, 63% of the bets are favoring the home team.Bottom LineWhere do we start with the Colts?  How much credit do we give them for going into Denver and coming away with a fairly one-sided win?  And if they are as good as they looked, how does that factor…

  • NFL Predictions 2015: Championship Playoff Picks

    Bobby Brooks
    11 Jan 2015 | 8:38 pm
For the Divisional games, the dogs reigned supreme going 3-1 ATS, and now lead 5-3 ATS in the playoffs. Also of note, dogs are 7-0-1 ATS in first halves this post-season. Finally, unders are slightly ahead at 4-3-1.Around town, Football Outsiders once again took every dog on the spread, and every favorite straight up, which means they went 3-1 ATS. The consensus picks out of Vegas were not as obvious as last week. The public were split on all the weekend games, while the sharps were all over Seattle and Denver.Unlike last week, my picks came out 2-2 ATS this weekend. The Packers came close,…
  • NFL Predictions 2015 NFC Championship: Packers Vs Seahawks

    Bobby Brooks
    11 Jan 2015 | 1:58 pm
Green Bay Packers Vs. Seattle Seahawks: SEA -6.5 (-120) (Pinnacle)Market WatchThis line opened -7 (+104) shortly after the Packers took out the Cowboys, and I wanted to get on it before it had a chance to move up. If I was setting this line, I'd open it at -7.5 at minimum, and even as high as -9 to keep it out of the teaser window. There's not a lot of action on this game yet, but the early money is on Seattle.Bottom LineI've been on the Packers the last couple times they traveled to Seattle. We all remember how they got robbed by the replacement officials, but when they returned there…

We are not even at the Super Bowl yet, but its never too early to put out a mock draft. The biggest question so far surrounding this draft was whether or not the Bucs will draft Winston or Mariota. But there are so many other questions. Especially for my Giants. This season was the definition of horrendous. Whether it was on offense or defense it was like watching pee-wee football every week. So, with so many holes to fill I will give you my picks for each round along with alternative picks. The Pick: Brandon Scherff OT, Iowa The 6’5″ 320 lbs OT out of Iowa is exactly what the New…

Man what a crazy two weeks of NFL football. I’d first like to start out and apologize for not getting an article completed last week. Due to illness and some unfortunate circumstances in my life I was unable to complete it. So to my weekly regulars I am sorry. We saw the Lions get burned by a penalty reversal/non call two weeks ago against the Cowboys. Then last week the Cowboys got burned by a crazy crazy rule. And Detroit was able to get a little jab in at the Cowboys after it by tweeting this: @Lions: Sorry @dallascowboys. We know the feeling. Now that is priceless! In perfect harmony,…

Photo by Mike Carter, Associated Press We have a long way to go between now and May when Roger Goodell saunters onto a stage in Chicago — serenaded by a chrous of boos for a variety of reasons — and starts reading off the names of tomorrow’s NFL stars. Be that as it may, the NFL Draft “experts” around the country are never shy about releasing their own mock drafts early and often. The Big Ten is well represented in a number of the mock drafts. I’ve seen as many as six players in the conference listed as potential first rounders in specific mocks —…

Ohio State capped off a magical season with a 42-20 thumping of the Oregon Ducks on Monday night. It was a great win for the Buckeyes and a win for the Big Ten and its fans. After years of having the mainstream media force-feed us an idea about how awful the Big Ten is from top to bottom, this one felt pretty good. That said, I wouldn’t spend too much time celebrating this one if I were a fan of any Big Ten team other than the Buckeyes. As exciting as the night was, it was also a sobering one. It was a reminder to the rest of the conference that what you were watching is the standard.

The Detroit Lions had three players play in their first ever Pro Bowl game on Sunday.  Two of them played for Team Irvin and one for Team Carter.  The lone Lion on Team Carter was Glover Quin.  Quin made a nice play to break up a pass by Team Irvin quarterback Matthew Stafford and finished with 5 tackles. The stars of the game though were on Team Irvin.  Matthew Stafford, who won the offensive MVP, threw for over 300 yards in the first half, and had 2 touchdown passes.  He looked sharp for most of the game, and finished the game with an interception and a fumble.  While the turnovers…

  • Marshawn Lynch is at it Again

    Jason Singer
    28 Jan 2015 | 1:57 pm
Another interview, same old story for Seattle Seahawks’ running back, Marshawn Lynch. Marshawn Lynch has been known as the guy who does not want to talk to the media. Lynch has even gone to the extent to avoid the media entirely, subsequently being fined by the NFL. My personal opinion: Let the guy live. I […] The post Marshawn Lynch is at it Again appeared first on Spit Black and Swing the Bat.

    Jason Singer
    27 Jan 2015 | 11:31 am
Calm. Cool. Confident. These are the three words that I would describe Tiger Woods at this moment. After watching his press conference earlier this morning, I don’t remember the last time I saw Tiger this relaxed. He was laughing, having a grand old time, and reminiscing about his Hole-In-One that he had earlier in his […] The post The New Tiger Woods appeared first on Spit Black and Swing the Bat.

    Jason Singer
    26 Jan 2015 | 6:39 am
Coach K, aka, Mike Krzyzewski made history yesterday afternoon recording his 1,000th career victory in NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball.  It took a valiant effort from the Dukies, as St. John’s fought hard at MSG, even leading by 11 at one point in the game. But the combo play of two freshman, Tyrus Jones and Jahlil Okafor, […] The post Coach K gets 1K appeared first on Spit Black and Swing the Bat.

    Justin Birnbaum
    25 Jan 2015 | 2:49 pm
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. That about sums up how the NFL is probably feeling about Josh Gordon these days. It’s almost comical how often this guy gets himself into trouble at this point. Adding to the long list of setbacks to his professional career, Josh Gordon is […] The post What’s Next for Josh Gordon? appeared first on Spit Black and Swing the Bat.

  • Laken Tomlinson A Fit For Next Chiefs’ Right Guard

    28 Jan 2015 | 5:33 pm
The process of the off-season evaluations is I full swing. We know John Dorsey places a lot of value on players’ performances in the Senior Bowl. Due to his week in Mobile, Tomlinson may well be at the top of Chiefs’ draft board.ScenarioThe Chiefs’ front office clearly adheres to the ‘best player available’ philosophy. In the first round of the 2015 draft, the will likely address one of their critical needs at wide receiver, offensive guard, cornerback and inside linebacker. The most likely selection will be one of the top tier wide receivers, if they are still available. Dorsey…

  • Why Colts Fans Shouldn't Expect Luck to Take Home Discount

    28 Jan 2015 | 3:53 pm
It’s inevitable. At some point, maybe this offseason, maybe the next, Andrew Luck will become the highest paid player in the NFL – maybe in history.Luck’s new potential deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Shefter. Many expect Luck’s deal to be around $25 million per year with guaranteed money that’s sure to exceed that received by other quarterbacks such as Colin Kaepernick, Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers.Luck has shot down the talk of a new deal, saying to The Indy Star: "There's nothing there right now," the quarterback said. "I didn't think about it all during the season and it's…

  • NFL Conference Championships Picks & Predictions - All Four of My Favorite Teams Made It

    Terrible Blogger
    17 Jan 2015 | 12:16 am
Conference Championship Sunday. We're another weekend closer to the clock striking midnight on football season, the one thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. Soon the carriage will be turned into a pumpkin, my gorgeous dress will turn to rags, and the barren void of baseball shall consume this once-fertile land. Yes it's the weekend before the biggest game of the year - the Pro Bowl - and as usual we've managed to cram some of the least likable fanbases possible into the Super Bowl. Cheer for no one, pray for meteors to hit the stadium, but watch every second of it because…

The best weekend of football is here. The seven best teams and also the Panthers will face off to determine who will go on to the conference finals and who will draft in the high 20's and get stuck reaching for a receiver that would have been there in the second round.  Ravens @ PatriotsAccurate representation of me when half of the pizza rolls are still coldFinally, the feel good story of the year. The Patriots faced a lot of adversity in the beginning of the year, but their Cinderella story continues Saturday - and I don’t see this carriage turning back into a pumpkin any…
  • Cowboys vs Lions Wild Card Recap

    8 Jan 2015 | 1:42 am
I am alone. I sit on the couch with the lights off, the blackout curtains drawn, and the ceiling fan rhythmically whirring above me. I have a cold beer nearby, and alcohol slightly further out of reach. You know, just in case this game goes the way I think it will. My soulless eyes, which normally serve as a window to my broken spirit, reflect the FOX pregame show. My eyes glaze over as they build the narratives around the game. It is the first time in history one of the leading stories in a playoff matchup began with the sentence “Barry Church had this to say.” It’s…

It's been a long season. Domestic abuse, child abuse, Johnny Manziel - the list goes on and on. Whether your team snagged a bye, barely limped in, or is watching from the couch, we can all agree that it's hilarious that the Eagles missed the playoffs.Arizona Cardinals @ Carolina PanthersTwo teams who are heading in wildly different directions. The Cardinals started 9-1, stole a tiki idol from Hawaiian caves, and desperately held on for dear life. The Panthers on the other hand were completely written off at the start of December and did that thing that terrible teams do every year - got hot…

    27 Dec 2014 | 2:11 am
This is it. The final week of the regular season. More importantly, the final week of Redzone until next September. No Thursday Night Football, no Monday Night Football. One day, every team, all divisional matchups. I hope my boy hole can handle it. Cowboys @ RedskinsIt’s 2014 and Romo is a legitimate MVP candidate who has thrown 10 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in the month of December. What a wonderful time to be alive, folks. My problem with this game is the fact that it’s at noon. The Cowboys barely have a chance at getting a bye in the playoffs. But that chance exists, which…
