The modern era of football has seen two opposing ideas worked into playbooks as if it were imperative they co-exist. I’m talking about attacking the defense with either a running quarterback or a passing one, which to outsiders might seem as trivial as casting a blonde or brunette Bond girl. Let’s just agree that both work.Of course, there’s no reason why a quarterback can’t be both, that is, an excellent runner who's also able to fire a 30-yard bullet between defenders arms, bobbing helmets and spittle. Seattle’s Russell Wilson might just be the best example of such a player,…

I have had the duty of picking a quality photographer for our wedding. As you can imagine, this is not an easy thing to do and most people end up failing when they try. I remember one wedding where the photographer was so demanding and so rude that everyone started to leave early. This is obviously a rare thing to see happen and most photographers are great people that only care about the results to the photos. They don’t get in the way, but after that experience, I wanted to make sure I was going with the right option immediately. I didn’t want to take any risks, you can also…

While this is not always necessary if you are hiring a construction company, the advantages of having an architect on-board may assist in designing a structure that suits your needs and desires. An experienced architect will be able to progress from the planning and design phase to the lodging of council documentation without difficulty removing stress from your side of the construction. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times; well…find a different uniform. Once again, Jerome Simpson has proven that he has no control over his love of drugs and alcohol. Simpson was cited for marijuana possession and an open container on July 7. With as many distractions as the Vikings have had the past week, I think it’s safe to say that we need to send him packing. The only reason that we’ve kept him around for so long was for his “potential” as a deep threat. Well, you can’t be a deep threat if you’re constantly in trouble with the law.
  • What we’ve learned from the NFL through Week 2

    James Turnage
    18 Sep 2014 | 2:27 pm
I can describe what I haven’t seen in two weeks of the NFL in a single word; DEFENSE. I have never seen so many wide open receivers in every game I watched. That included the Vikings, the Patriots, the Packers, the Chargers, the Raiders, and the Champion Seahawks.  I knew the NFL had become an offensive league, but Sunday’s lack of defensive play was appalling. There were other indicators of what the 2014 season will be like in the next 15 weeks. Gains or losses through free agency have helped some teams and hurt others. The New York Giants are as bad as they were in 2013.
  • Is the NFL in Trouble?

    James Turnage
    18 Sep 2014 | 2:17 pm
A commentary by James Turnage A continuing increase in the number of NFL players who are experiencing legal troubles or who have violated the league’s substance abuse policy is creating a rumble within the community of players, coaches, sports writers and fans. That, combined with rule changes, often unjustly enforced, is resulting in the question; is the NFL in trouble? Now a superstar, Adrian Peterson is in the news, and not in a positive way. Is this the result of a league which has become so greedy, it has overlooked potential problems with young men who become overnight millionaires?

    Jackson Sipperly
    18 Sep 2014 | 2:08 pm
Critics met the moves made by Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman with much skepticism this off-season. Among the moves panned was the decision to let arguably its top two play-makers in the secondary, Mike Mitchell and Captain Munnerlyn, sign big free agent contracts elsewhere. He replaced them by signing veteran castoffs such as Roman Harper, Thomas DeCoud, and Antoine Cason to fill the holes in their depleted secondary. Allowing his second and third receivers to seek employment elsewhere was also criticized, but not nearly as much as his decision to cut Steve Smith Sr., the…

    17 Sep 2014 | 2:36 pm
Is having luck how the Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a win Monday night? I’m sure there are plenty of message boards and bar-goers that think so. And there are even more that think the refs handed them the game. Honestly, the truth is somewhere in between Eagles Monday night win. Philly played an uneventful, albeit an atrocious, first half. Nick Foles held onto the ball too long (and he had plenty of time to do so) and still missed wide-open receivers. Foles missed an open Riley Cooper across the middle several times, once in a key spot that would have given the Eagles a crucial first…

  • NFL Predictions 2014: Week 3 Picks

    Bobby Brooks
    19 Sep 2014 | 5:30 pm
Week 2 is done and it was much more of a mixed bag than Week 1. Dogs narrowly came out on top 8-7-1 ATS. Unders went 9-7 ... and it's interesting that unders are leading the way through two weeks of the season (18-14). It took a while for the books to truly adjust to all the scoring the last couple of years, but they've finally found their rhythm.Week 2 is probably the trickiest week of the season since we don't know exactly how much of what we saw in Week 1 was real. Football Outsiders picks went 4-12 ATS this week! I can understand struggling early in the season, but that's shocking. The…

    Bobby Brooks
    19 Sep 2014 | 5:28 pm
Tennessee Titans Vs. Cincinnati Bengals: CIN -6.5 (Pinnacle)Market WatchThey are who we thought they were? Last week this line was -6.5 in the LVH look-ahead, and it re-opened at the same number after Week 2 action. With the A.J. Green news, some shops have moved this to -7, but you can find -6.5 if you have sportsbook options. 73% of the bets are on the home team.Bottom LineWho covers: Titans or Bengals? Is this one pick too many this week? Perhaps, but I waited all week to see what A.J. Green's status would be. I thought he would be listed as "questionable", but he was upgraded to "probable"…

Denver Broncos Vs. Seattle SeahawksMarket WatchWhen these teams met in the Super Bowl I thought the wrong team was favored, and I got to sit back and watch Seattle cash my ticket with ease. This time around, deciding which side has value is a whole lot trickier. The LVH had the Seahawks favored by -4.5 in the look-ahead line, and it re-opened at the same number after Week 2. It's moved up to -5, but -4.5's are still out there. So far, 57% of the bets are on the Broncos.Bottom LineWho covers: Broncos or Seahawks? The biggest reason I liked the Seahawks in the Super Bowl was because the Broncos…
  • NFL Predictions 2014 Week 3: Packers Vs. Lions

    Bobby Brooks
    17 Sep 2014 | 8:45 pm
Green Bay Packers Vs. Detroit Lions: GB +3 (-123) (Pinnacle)Market WatchAre the Lions getting a lot of respect or is the market down on the Packers?  It's probably a combination of both, but I still have Green Bay rated higher until I see otherwise. The LVH look-ahead line had the Packers -1. After Week 2 action, it re-opened at Lions -2.5. It's moved back and forth a bit, but right now we can get Green Bay +3 for -120ish depending on where you shop. Usually the Packers are -3 (or more) when they travel to Detroit in the Stafford era. So far 63% of the tickets are on the road team.Bottom…

    Bobby Brooks
    17 Sep 2014 | 12:49 pm
Chicago Bears Vs. New York Jets: CHI +3 (-120) (Pinnacle)Market WatchLast week the Jets were listed as -1.5 point favorites in the LVH look-ahead line. After Week 2 finished New York had re-opened at -2. Since Monday morning that has gone up to -2.75. If you like the Jets you can get them at -2.5 for -120. Like the Bears? You can get +3 for the same price. Where will this line go? 66% percent of the bets are on Chicago, but so far the line is moving the other way.Bottom LineWho covers: Bears or Jets?Who was the right side in the Bears-49ers game? You could easily argue either case. The same…

The first week is in the books and boy was it a crazy football Sunday! If it wasn’t for some late game heroics, I would have blew the Philly game. Thankfully the Eagles decided to play in the second half and get the 10.5 point cover over one of the worst teams in the league. The Bears were my only loser last week, stopping an undefeated week and I’m sure killing a lot of people’s survival pools. Cincinnati was my other winner last week. After being up 15-0 for the majority of the game, they had to get a huge play from AJ Green to secure the victory against Baltimore. Two…

I did win the Falcons game so including that my yearly records are now 21-12 SU and 18-14-1 ATS.  Lets jump into the rest of week 3…Chargers (+2.5) over BILLS- I could see the Chargers being impacted by the east coast trip and the potential letdown over the Seahawks, but I just think Rivers will push the issue and force the Bills offense to do more than they have been asked to do so far. Chargers 20 Bills 17Cowboys (-1) over RAMS- I’m still…
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Heavy Investments in Free Agency

    Jason Fitzgerald
    19 Sep 2014 | 11:22 am
Thursday night the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put up one of the worst performances in the history of the NFL, falling behind the Atlanta Falcons 56-0 before the Falcons mercifully called off the dogs late in the 3rd quarter. The Buccaneers at 0-3 look to be finished for the season and may soon be a lesson in roster building for the rest of the NFL.There may be no team in the NFL that was built more via outside organizations than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The philosophy is now funneling through two regimes. Last season the Buccaneers fired head coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik for…
  • Zack’s Thurday Night Pick

    Zack Moore
    18 Sep 2014 | 5:17 pm
So, I’ve improved to 9-10-1 this year in my picks, but it feels like .500 because the Jets game against the Raiders felt like a blowout, not a 5-point push.Anyway, on to tonight’s pick…I’m enticed by the over tonight at 47 points. Vincent Jackson GOES OFF against the Falcons and I think the Bucs do well tonight against a bad defense on a fast surface. I do think the Falcons win this game because their offense will be too good for the Bucs defense, so I think the over is safe in this situation because of my initial reaction to this point total: the Falcons offense is…

Well I had another week of a 10-6 SU record which is not great but did improve to 11-5 ATS which is a big improvement after last weeks disaster. Yearly records are now 20-12 SU and 17-14-1 ATS.  I’ll be back Saturday with the rest of the picks for the week.FALCONS (-6.5) over Buccaneers- This is kind of a big game for both teams, but certainly much bigger for Tampa Bay who is already 0-2 on the season with both losses at home. The Bucs have looked inept on offense and if they can not turn it around against the Falcons non-existent defense then its likely they won’t turn it around…

  • Seven Public Relations Moves for an NFL Comeback

    Megan Landvatter
    20 Sep 2014 | 6:14 pm
The National Football League has faced a lot of criticism lately regarding their personal conduct policy. Given that I am pursuing a career in Public Relations, I cannot help but view this situation through a PR lens. Here are my seven steps in repairing the NFL's public image. 1\. Absolutely no more secrets. It may be cliche, but honesty is always the best policy. Moving forward this means that the NFL must be open to the public. This means that 'no comment' will not be in their vocabulary and they will not decline to comment at any time. 2\. Players will take precedent. The new conduct…
  • Fantasy Football: Time to Sell High?

    Chris Jalil
    20 Sep 2014 | 5:15 pm
There’s no day I look forward to more than Sunday. And as a 23-year-old recent college grad, who should be capitalizing on his youth (and relative health) every single day – that’s absolutely ridiculous. But what can I say? That’s what Fantasy Football does to me. For 8 months of the year, Sunday’s suck. They’re wasted whining about your lost Saturday and dreading the misery of work on Monday. That’s why I say: forget Friday night out with the boys; shelf Saturday dinner dates, and focus every ounce of your attention on the most glorious day of the week this time of year. And…
  • Week 3 Power Rankings

    Victor Matoush
    19 Sep 2014 | 10:06 pm
Here is how I see things after 2 games, feel free to skewer my selections as it is a pretty ambiguous situation! 1.Denver until I see a reason for them to drop, hasn't happened yet. 2\. Cincinnati- 2 solid wins with a blowout potential Sunday to go to 3-0 3\. Carolina- I am a tad concerned about the running game but with that D, 14 points will win a lot of games for them. 4\. Philly- Two comeback wins in a row, was that a fluke? McCoy/Sproles look unstoppable. 5\. Houston-Foster looks good and the defense should dominate which makes life easy for Fitzy. 6.Seattle- If only the 12th man…
  • Week 3 Upsets: Make your picks

    Krithic Annamalai
    19 Sep 2014 | 3:12 pm
Only two weeks in and this NFL season is already upside down. The Buffalo Bills are 2-0. The New Orleans Saints are 0-2 with a loss to Cleveland. Last season’s playoff teams have started 2014 with a combined 13-11 record, while the last-place teams from each division last season are a combined 8-8 thus far. It has been a difficult task to tell the good from the bad. Week 3 promises to be full of more upsets and surprises for the football fan to marvel at or to throw food at their televisions. I have Cleveland over Baltimore. Are the Browns a legitimate threat in the AFC North? Probably not,…

  • NFL Power Rankings Heading into Week 3

    LukeHB
    20 Sep 2014 | 3:50 am
At just 2 weeks old, the NFL season has a long way to go before crowning its champion, but that wont stop us from trying to predict who has the best chance to still be playing football come January. In this new weekly feature, we rank all 32 teams. This week, we look at the rankings coming into Week 3. 1. Denver Broncos (2-0)—Yes, the Broncos allowed both the Colts and Chiefs to come back into games, and yes, if not for last minute heroics by their stars they could easily be 0-2 at the moment. But they are not. At 2-0 your chances of making the playoffs soar to 68%, and with Peyton Manning…

The NFL active Sack Leader John Abraham is apparently mulling retirement after admitting his “heart isn’t in the game anymore”. #453316600 / gettyimages.com Former NFL Player of the Year, Super Bowl Champion and 3 times Pro Bowler, Ray Rice, has been released by the Baltimore Ravens, and handed an indefinite suspension by the league. Rice was cut, and suspended following the release of video of his assault on his then then-fiancée (now wife) by TMZ Sports. Last month, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that Ray Rice would receive a two game suspension following his assault Janay Palmer. Almost immediately, the criticism began, with most considering the suspension too lenient, given the nature of the…
  • NFL Opening Weekend: Five Things We Learned

    10 Sep 2014 | 3:11 am
The NFL Regular Season is underway, and as is often the case, it was full of surprises no-one could have predicted after the off-season and preseason periods. And at the same time, some things seemed to remain the same, in spite of plenty of indication that they should change. We look at five of the things we learned  from the NFL  opening weekend after the jump. 1. NFC West Remains Division to Beat In their opening games, both the NFL Champion Seattle Seahawks and 2013 playoff contender San Francisco 49ers proved that they are still amongst the favourites to contend for the Super Bowl…

    14 Aug 2014 | 7:22 am
#453439330 / gettyimages.com The NFL Preseason is underway, with one week already in the books. For most teams, Week One is a game of little to no significance. Position battles are far from settled, starters play a virtually non-existent role, and results are often meaningless. But with just 3 weeks until the regular season kicks off with the Packers and Seahawks in Seattle on September 4th, each passing game has more and more significance. Here are Three things to watch during week two of the preseason. Quarterback battles heating up across the league. More often than not, there are rarely…

  • Detroit Lions Promote Corner Mohammed Seisay

    Vince Vielhaber
    20 Sep 2014 | 2:26 pm
The Detroit Lions have announced that they are promoting corner Mohammed Seisay from the practice squad to the active roster.  This move has been expected all week as the Lions are short at the corner position.  This week Cassius Vaughn went down with an ankle injury.  Coach Jim Caldwell did not seem concerned about the injury stating that they feel good about what Seisay can do and that he could be promoted in a pinch.  It appears as if that pinch happened as the team filled the open roster spot vacated by the release of Kevin Ogletree.    With Green Bay in town this week, it is no…
  • Detroit Lions Release Wide Receiver Kevin Ogletree

    Vince Vielhaber
    20 Sep 2014 | 2:22 pm
The Detroit Lions have released wide receiver Kevin Ogletree.  Ogletree, who practiced as the third receiver all throughout the offseason and pre-season, was relegated to the bench and inactive in both weeks 1 and 2.  The Detroit Lions have had problems keeping corners healthy this season and needed to free up a roster spot for another corner before playing against Green Bay this weekend.  Green Bay is a very wide receiver centric team so rolling with just 4 healthy corners, one of which was just signed this week, is not wise.  The corresponding signing will be announced next.  It is…

The Detroit Lions announced their injury report for their week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers.  There were no surprises on it really as the injury statuses from yesterday and today pretty much told the story.  Cassius Vaughn will be out making the secondary even more interesting this week.  Below is the full injury report:   RT LaAdrian Waddle (Calf) – OUT CB Cassius Vaughn (Ankle) – OUT LB Travis Lewis (Quad) – OUT SS James Ihedigbo (Neck) – Doubtful FB Montell Owens (Hamstring) – Doubtful DT Nick Fairley (Bicep) – Questionable DE Ezekiel…
  • Week Three Preview Detroit Lions Versus Green Bay Packers

    Vince Vielhaber
    19 Sep 2014 | 11:01 am
The Detroit Lions face off against the Green Bay Packers this week in a game that could decide the direction of the NFC North this year.  While all four teams are 1-1 right now, A game against a division rival this early in the season usually sets the tone for division play.  An early division loss usually deflates a team.  For the past two weeks, we have correctly predicted the winner of the game (although score wise we were way off).  We hope to keep the streak alive in week three.  Here is how the game breaks down.   OFFENSE Detroit Lions Offensive Line vs. Green Bay Packers…
  • Detroit Lions Restructure Contract Of Reggie Bush

    Vince Vielhaber
    18 Sep 2014 | 10:59 am
The Detroit Lions have restructured the contract of running back Reggie Bush today.  This was first reported by Tom Pelissero.  The Lions did this to create more room under the cap as Bush is still under contract until 2016.  The reason for the restructure is not yet known.  They could be just covering themselves for when a move is needed or they could be planning a move.  Either way, they have now restructured both Glover Quin and Reggie Bush.

  • Parents attack coach with brass knuckles, coach's wife repels attack with gun, coach pulls his gun, all in front of kids

    12 Sep 2014 | 9:26 am
Forgive the long title, but this story out of Wichita, Kan. is really out-of-bounds. Watch the KAKE-TV video below (email subscribers click here to view media). This can't continue. Football playing time does not warrant an assault on a man with brass knuckles. Football does not warrant guns being pulled in front of kids. This is beyond embarrassing. It's reckless and dangerous.Beating the coach up won't make him play your kids more. You can't drive your kid to practice from jail. While I am being somewhat flippant, parents need to take the advice we often give our kids: Think before you…
  • Now that Ray Rice is gone, here's what you say to your son...

    9 Sep 2014 | 1:37 pm
The Baltimore Ravens cut running back Ray Rice and the NFL suspended him indefinitely on Monday after TMZ video surfaced showing him knocking out his former fiancee and current wife, Janay Rice. Rice's career is probably over. No team would dare sign him in the current climate. Even if one wanted to, the NFL's indefinite suspension makes it an impossibility.Ray Rice's "firing" does not end the discussion about domestic violence, though. The men who commit acts of domestic violence against women have not been purged from the Earth. As a matter of fact, many of the men who will become abusers…
  • Bengals show class and heart in cutting player

    5 Sep 2014 | 9:41 am
When the Cincinnati Bengals completed their final cuts last Saturday, the roster did not include defensive tackle Devon Still. Getting cut deals a serious blow to any athlete's dream of playing in the NFL. For Devon Still, It could've meant something worse. Still's four-year-old daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with stage four pediatric cancer in June. How would he provide for her now? Aside from a good salary, NFL players also receive health insurance for their families. Worse yet, if another team wanted to sign him, how could he possibly leave Leah...even if leaving meant he could better take…
  • The Michael Sam conversation we will have with our kids

    2 Sep 2014 | 9:58 am
Sports is the closest thing we have to a meritocracy, but it is not a perfect one. Working hard, studying and taking care of yourself will get you very far. Putting your head down and grinding it out will get you on many a roster. However, there are those times when being good, even great, just isn't good enough.Free agent NFL defensive end Michael Sam was released by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend. He was not picked up by any of the other 31 franchises, nor was he signed to anyone's practice squad. Sam played well during the NFL preseason. He had three sacks and 11 tackles, 10 were…
  • 10 lessons from the Little League World Series

    25 Aug 2014 | 10:42 am
As a kid, I dreamed of playing in the Little League World Series (LLWS). In terms of the sports calendar, it was the last hoorah before the start of school. I always wondered why St. Louis never had a Little League World Series team. Were we not good enough? After all, St. Louis IS a baseball town, right?Sure, we are. It's just that St. Louis youth baseball leagues are not affiliated with Little League Baseball, Inc. You know, the real Little League. It's not called Little League because of the size of the kids. That's really the name of the organization. The world has been a very turbulent…
