Christine Michael has played very sparingly over his first two seasons after being selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Michael was frequently inactive as a rookie and appeared in just 10 games for the team last season. He has just 52 carries for 254 yards in two…

  • Oakland Raiders: Creating the Blueprint for Optimal Offense in 2015

    27 May 2015 | 7:31 pm
The Oakland Raiders offense is projected to make significant strides in 2015. One must wonder what's offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s blueprint for optimizing a revamped offense in Oakland. Musgrave gave one clue as to what the Raiders offense could resemble this year. Think Chip Kelly and that up-tempo offense in Philadelphia scoring points in flurries. Oakland will need those flurries to outscore opponents with question marks and unknowns on the defensive side of the ball. Let&rsquo

It’s no secret that I love to pore through the street photography tag in the Reader and share images that catch my attention. Join me on another trip around the world as seen through the eyes (and lenses!) of these seven skilled photographers. This arresting image of a bird in a car — juxtaposed against the unknowing elderly man passing by — mesmerizes me. Taken by Beirut photographer Ghaleb Cabbabé, there’s an element of the macabre about this photograph that I find intriguing. The odd bird and the filthy windscreen create a certain palpable sinister…

    18 May 2015 | 10:30 am
Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will be on the cover of Madden NFL 16 this year. Only in his second year, Beckham has some thought on what should change in the NFL. “I think that we should make more money, personally,” Beckham told Lucy McCalmont of the Huffington Post. It may seem an easy comment to scoff at at first — rich young men making more money — but Beckham’s argument makes some sense. Here’s his reasoning: “I understand that basketball plays 80-something games, baseball plays this many games, soccer plays that many games, but this is a sport…

He already is a powerful presence in the ground game. Multiple teams told that they’ve given Flowers a first-round grade – most have him in the top 20. Many project Flowers to start out at right tackle, and they’ll…

If you’ve ever been to college, you probably know how transferring works. You take the credits you’ve earned at your current college, apply to another college, and that other college will tell you exactly what they’ll accept toward your degree at the new school. Seems simple enough. Unless you are a college athlete. As we’ve seen in the news recently, college football and basketball players can’t simply transfer wherever they want, whenever they want, without being penalized. Introducing Commitment IndexPart 2:  The Trough Model and the Folly of “Matching Cash With Cap”Part 1: The “Mortgaging the Future” AssertionAs has been well documented, the NFL salary cap is designed to be a “hard cap,” as opposed to the alternative option (such as in the case of the NBA) a “soft cap.” Even though a team may spend more actual money than the salary cap limit in any given season, the NFL cap is “hard” in that total cap charges cannot possibly exceed the salary cap. On the other hand, the NBA salary cap contains numerous “exceptions” that…

Introducing Commitment IndexPart 1:  The “Mortgaging the Future” Assertion“Team X may have mortgaged its future.” This phrase can frequently be found adjoining analysis of transactions in a variety of contexts, such as when (i) a team signs a free agent to a significant contract, (ii) a team signs one or more older players to large contracts, or (iii) a team renegotiates a player’s contract to free up cap room in the current year at the expense of shifting cap dollars into future years. The application of this phrase to these scenarios certainly passes the common sense test.

Granted, I am currently studying it for the NFLPA’s Certification Exam, so maybe I haven’t gotten to that part yet.Think of this, the NFL had around $10 billion in revenues last year, so fans are obviously okay with spending money on all things NFL. • Detroit Lions Sign Corey Wootton Release Skye Dawson

    14 May 2015 | 8:42 am
Yesterday, the Detroit Lions released receiver Skye Dawson from their 90 man roster.  The move dropped them from 90 players to 89 players which was a bit odd.  The move they made today explains why it was done.  They signed defensive end Corey Wootton to a 1 year deal.  They needed another defensive end to replace George Johnson and Wootton just might be that guy.  He played for the Minnesota Vikings last season and has the size, 6’6 270lbs, and the versatility (plays defensive tackle and defensive end) that the Lions like.  He will likely make the team given the lack of depth on…

The Detroit Lions were active today.  They started the morning off by restructuring the contract of Glover Quin which freed up about $2.2 million.  The money raises Quin’s cap number, but lowers his base pay.  It essentially gives him guaranteed money right now instead of spread out throughout the year. The Lions then announced the signing of two veterans.  The first is wide receiver Greg Salas.  Salas is 6’2 210lbs but has bounced around the league.  The second was corner Chris Owens.  Owens has also bounced around the league in his short career.  He likely will just…

Of the two, Moore likely has the better chance to make the team.  He was originally with the New Orleans Saints back when Detroit offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was there.  Moore had over 1000…

As of right now, the team has 3 open roster spots that they can fill by either signing more…

    7 May 2015 | 12:40 pm
In the sixth round, the Detroit Lions surprised many by selecting another corner.  They took Texas corner Quandre Diggs.  Diggs, who is only 5’9″ seemed like an odd choice for the Lions.  He is too small to play outside so he is almost limited to the nickel role.  Detroit currently has two nickel corners that they drafted in Bill Bentley and Nevin Lawson.  They also recently signed corner Josh Wilson who was terrible as an outside corner, but very good as a nickel corner.  So that begs the question, why draft Diggs?  There are two answers for this question.  The first is…

There is nothing the NFL can do in May to rectify something that happened in January. The league could have disqualified the Patriots and put the Colts in the Super Bowl. It could have suspended Brady for the Super Bowl. Neither of those was a viable option. It would have been like telling your kid he can't go anywhere for a month. Sounds like a harsh…
  • Houston Rockets classless in playoff victory

    28 Apr 2015 | 8:39 pm
The Houston Rockets were on their way to a closeout win Tuesday night in the first round of the NBA Western Conference playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks. • Paying Adrian Peterson a Balancing Act for Minnesota Vikings

    27 May 2015 | 8:16 pm
By now, you’ve probably read the same article involving Adrian Peterson approximately 32 (or more) times this offseason. As a result, you probably also have about 15,000 theories on why the star running back hasn’t returned to the Minnesota Vikings after an absence that has dated back to last September. All the rumors have been swirling around ever since Peterson was allowed to communicate with the team in February and things reached a fever pitch during Mike Zimmer’s press conference when he revealed what we knew all along.“[Adrian’s] really got two choices.” Zimmer told media…
  • Carolina Panthers Position Preview: Wide Receivers

    27 May 2015 | 5:30 pm
In a copycat league, most teams who are rebuilding follow the same mold. Find a new coach, draft a new quarterback, then surround your young signal caller with weapons to help him succeed. Teams like the Indianapolis Colts have rigorously followed this blueprint. However, the Carolina Panthers are a notable exception. Since drafting Cam Newton in 2011, the team has trotted out the likes of Legedu Naanee, Brandon LaFell and Jerricho Cotchery as Newton’s No. 2 receivers.Aside from trading a third round pick for tight end Greg Olsen and spending a first round pick on Kelvin Benjamin, the team…

  • Rams Pre-Training Camp Preview: Wide Receivers

    27 May 2015 | 2:55 pm
There used to be a time when the St. Louis Rams’ passing attack was one of the best in the league. Kurt Warner would sling rainbow passes downfield to Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, sometimes Ricky Proehl and Marshall Faulk. They would drive down the field, score a touchdown and repeat all afternoon. It was around that time Enron was still in business and everyone thought frosted tips was a respectable haircut. Those days are long gone. Current StatusNow, the Rams passing attack, like their rushing attack, is lackluster and arguably the worst in the league, despite having the most attention…
