  • Chiefs Make Final Cuts for Now

    31 Aug 2014 | 7:59 am
On Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs temporarily put together the men that Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager John Dorsey have decided to go to war with this season. However, those that made it yesterday might not be the ones that hit the field a week from Sunday in the season opener.
  • That's A Wrap

    29 Aug 2014 | 3:43 pm
The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up the Preseason with a 34-14 defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. The Chiefs close the preseason at 1-3, and a week from Sunday will open the regular season at home against the Tennessee Titans. So what can be made of their final preseason game?
  • Swinging at the Chiefs 53

    28 Aug 2014 | 8:30 pm
Now that the Kansas City Chiefs have played their final exhibition game, the hard part begins. Finding the basis for the 2014 roster won’t be easy. As we learned a year ago, even with the roster set, this franchise is more than willing to subtract and add at any position. So who makes my final cut?
  • Andy Reid Has Work to Do

    28 Aug 2014 | 7:44 pm
If the Kansas City Chiefs are going to live up to their efforts from last season, it likely won’t have anything to do with the teams 1-3 record in exhibition games. On Thursday night, the back-ups lost to the Green Bay Packers but that matters very little as roster cuts loom and the head coach has to find ways to make his team better.

A nagging sore left foot kept Jordan Mills out of the Bears’ four exhibition games, but the second-year right tackle suggested Monday that the injury wouldn’t have kept him out of any regular-season action. “If I had to, I would have [played],” Mills said. “But if the trainers felt I had to sit out, I would have tried my best to get back in. “We have a great training staff, and they’re here for my best interest, so if I had to sit out, I’d sit out. But I would have fought to get back on the field.” Mills said …
  • Bears safeties Chris Conte, Ryan Mundy in limbo

    2 Sep 2014 | 12:18 am
Two safeties returned to practice, but their roles remained in limbo. Chris Conte had limited work Monday, his first day back since suffering a concussion Aug. 22 against the Seahawks. Presumed starter Ryan Mundy returned, too, after suffering a head gash in the same game. Coach Marc Trestman said the Bears will wait and see before naming starters, suggesting Wednesday as the earliest date. Conte played only 22 preseason snaps — all in Seattle — before the concussion. “He hasn’t had the preparation time certainly that other guys have had, there’s no doubt about it,” Trestman said.
  • Bears confident defense will be better when games count

    2 Sep 2014 | 12:18 am
Hold your fire. After a miserable 2013 season and an unimpressive 2014 preseason, the Bears’ defense is in the crosshairs of fans, media and other dubious critics. And rightfully so. The Bears finally have an NFL-quality offense that should strike fear in even the best opponents. If the defense sabotages a playoff berth again, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery will pay the price — in varying degrees of scorn and punishment — when the dust settles in January. But let’s wait until we see exactly what they are before pulling the trigger.

When offensive coaches draw up plays, their unit is on the bottom. Defensive coaches put the offense on top. There’s more than just a clerical difference, too, and Trestman knows it. “I think that when you’re on different sides of the ball, you do see the world a little bit different,” he said. That’s why Trestman — who begins his second season at the Bears’ helm Sunday against the Buffalo Bills …

This would at least be in keeping with the adopted process of several NFL general managers in such a scenario. Thanks to Brad Meester, the Jaguars haven’t had to worry about finding a starting center for quite a while. That changed this year, though. 2 Sep 2014 | 7:08 am
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has had a tumultuous preseason, but it looks like it's ending on a high note. In May the Lions declined to pick up Fairley's $5.5-million option for the 2015-16 season — a sign that they were unconvinced that the former No. 13-overall pick was the long-term answer at defensive tackle. After the team asked him to lose weight over the summer, he reportedly got down to 295 pounds, which was actually lighter than the Lions wanted. He showed up to traini

Matt Schaub suffered through a terrible preseason only adding to the pressure that eventually led to the Oakland Raiders announcing they will start the rookie quarterback in Week 1. Green-Ellis is known for his hard running style but recently has declined since his first season with the Bengals when he averaged 3.9 yards per carry. When doing my research and preparing for the 2014 NFL Draft, I found a diamond in the rough. Quarterbacks were plenty in this draft but to me one stood out above the rest. It was not Teddy Bridgewater, nor Johnny Manziel or Derek Carr. It was a junior out of Central Florida that caught my eye, Blake Bortles. This, ladies and gentleman, should be the starting QB for the Jacksonville Jaguars. As I watched YouTube video of Blake Bortles, I could see something special.…

Well, he must be an extremely charming individual on a personal level because a quick rundown of his recent accomplishments leaves you wondering how the guy has held a job for so long. • NFL Predictions 2014: Week 1

    Bobby Brooks
    27 Aug 2014 | 9:46 am
As you might have noticed I took a pass on the preseason this year. The NFLX has enough variance to it as is, but the flag-happy experimentation was too much for me to get involved.  Since it involves twice as much time to handicap due to the expanded rosters and coaching motivations, it was better off to focus on the regular season.Week 1 is always the most interesting week for bettors since the lines have been out for months and most of the value has already been sucked out ... or has it? There is always under/overreaction to what takes place in the exhibition games and everyone has…

Is is just me or did the offseason fly by this year? The NFLX is on the way and the HOF game will be here in no time.I won't be doing previews this season since it can become a bit redundant given all the coverage this league gets. My recommendation would be to go ahead and purchase the Football Outsiders Almanac. It's the perfect mix between advanced stats and practical analysis that gets you up to speed on every team, and it's a much higher quality breakdown than what you'll find on national websites or magazines. If you're just in it for casual fun, check out Andy Benoit's stuff…

The 2013/2014 is officially in the books and the Seattle Seahawks take home the big prize. I certainly didn't expect a blowout, but it wasn't all that surprising either.Harvin provided huge plays, the defense did what it did all year, and the offense took advantage of the mismatches. I doubt that Seattle will be as healthy next post-season, but they have all the pieces to contend for the foreseeable future. It was great to end the year on a high note going 7-3-1 ATS in the playoffs (20-7-2 over the final 9 weeks). I was on the wrong side of too many close decisions during the regular season,…

  • Get Your Man! How to Make a Fair Trade:

    25 Aug 2014 | 4:44 pm
Most people think of a trade as one player for another straight up. This doesn’t work very often, nor is it a smart way to conduct a fair trade in the Fantasy Football world. If you want to preserve your credibility as a Fantasy Football team owner, then LISTEN UP! Present a Package Deal: For example, offer up 2 or more (not more than 3 or 4 otherwise you should just swap ownership of teams) players for the SAME amount of players in return. Most fantasy owners do not want to be bothered with having to drop a player off their team or fill gaps that are created via trades. Do not make them…

The Big Ten had a pretty solid week to open the season. Aside from a letdown from Northwestern and a tough loss by Wisconsin, conference looked as good from top to bottom as any in the country. Here are my grades and a quick review of each team for the week: Ohio State — This went just about how I thought it would go. Navy stuck around and gave the Buckeyes fits early on, but Ohio State’s depth and talent eventually allowed them to pull away. I don’t know how different this game would have been, if at all, with Braxton Miller under center. GRADE: B Michigan — The…

Here is what he came up with: Home vs. Appalachian State: This is not the App State of a few years ago who stunned Michigan in the Big House. This is a team coming off a 4-8 season. Michigan should roll it up here and win by 24 points. 1-0 At Notre Dame: This is always a good game, but I’m feeling a good early win on the road to really get things going. I like Michigan in a close game 28-24. 2-0 Home vs. Miami of Ohio: This…

  • Initial Thoughts on JJ Watt’s $100 Million Contract

    2 Sep 2014 | 6:29 am
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle JJ Watt has signed a six year contract extension worth $100 million that will make him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. The contract would contain $51 million in guaranteed money. The first thing that jumps out to me  are the numbers in the contract and the similarity to Mario Williams of the Buffalo Bills. Williams had signed a six year contract worth $96 million with the Bills a few years ago that had been considered an outlier for a number of reasons. The maximum value of that contract was $100 million and the total guarantee…

On the other hand, is it a smart rule any longer, given the fact that marijuana is legal in the two states whose teams played in last February’s Super Bowl and an increasing body of research that suggests it is safe or, put differently, has positive effects in certain circumstances?Last spring, I went to a Sports Law Symposium at the New York School of Law. An ESPN reporter was one of the…
  • Perspective on Michael Sam Being Cut

    Zack Moore
    30 Aug 2014 | 5:28 pm
I was inspired to comment on this story as so many in the Twitter-verse are either commenting that Michael Sam got cut because he’s gay or they’re saying “I told you so bro, he’s just not good enough to play in the NFL.” Both statements are wrong. The Rams drafted Michael Sam because they saw him as the best player on the board in the 7th round, but they were also pretty well stacked at the defensive end position. They’re paying their top three defensive ends Chris Long, William Hayes and Robert Quinn about $18 million combined this season, so what they were looking for was a low…

  • Predicting every NFL Week 1 game

    Alex Hoegler
    1 Sep 2014 | 8:22 pm
**NFL Kickoff: Green Bay Packers vs Seattle Seahawks** This should be a great game, and it's not only because it's two marquee teams, or it'so offense vs. defense, or it's the first game of the 2014 NFL season. What makes this matchup attractive? It's a rematch of the Hail Mary game where the Seahawks defeated the Packers when Russell Wilson threw an interception, that the replacement refs mistakenly ruled for a touchdown. The Seahawks won the game, the real NFL refs were brought back, and now the rematch. Don't bet on either side to win via blowout, it's going to come down to the final…
  • Derek Carr named starting QB for the Oakland Raiders

    Tyler Birss
    1 Sep 2014 | 5:57 pm
In a move that was growing increasingly expected, Derek Carr has been named the starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. The combination of Carr thriving in the preseason as Matt Schaub struggled likely resulted in this decision. A rookie out of Fresno State, Carr was a second-round pick in the most recent draft, making it interesting that he'll be starting before Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater, all high profile first-round picks. The Raiders have improved their offense through free agency by bringing in Maurice Jones-Drew and James Jones. They also strengthened…
  • NFL Award Predictions

    Alex Hoegler
    1 Sep 2014 | 5:13 pm
**MVP-Drew Brees** Peyton Manning is the obvious choice, but Drew Brees looks like he's poised for a great year. Manning won't toss 55 touchdowns this year, and Brees is a real threat to throw for 40-plus. This year, he has another season with young receiver Kenny Stills, and now has the dynamic rookie Brandin Cooks, along with the already-steller Marques Colston and Jimmy Graham. The Saints are fielding another elite defense that should give Brees more opportunities with the ball. Brees hasn't won the NFL MVP yet, but he looks destined to collect his first this year. _ _ _Runner up: Peyton…
  • How many 49ers are going to be arrested or suspended this offseason?

    Ben Bagamery
    1 Sep 2014 | 5:10 pm
Just under the wire, [another 49ers defender has been arrested](http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2014/08/31/report-dt-mcdonald-involved-in-domestic-violence-dispute/). Will this be a test case for the new 6-game minimum suspension the NFL has just rolled out? Missing Bowman, McDonald, and Aldon Smith, can this defense be even half-decent for the first 6 games of 2014? How bad will this get in San Francisco? Do the front office and coaching staff need to be examined for how they're handling their character judgements?

  • NFL Preseason—Three Things to Watch For During Week Two.

    LukeHB
    14 Aug 2014 | 7:22 am
#453439330 / gettyimages.com The NFL Preseason is underway, with one week already in the books. For most teams, Week One is a game of little to no significance. Position battles are far from settled, starters play a virtually non-existent role, and results are often meaningless. But with just 3 weeks until the regular season kicks off with the Packers and Seahawks in Seattle on September 4th, each passing game has more and more significance. Here are Three things to watch during week two of the preseason. Quarterback battles heating up across the league. More often than not, there are rarely…
  • NFL “Offensive Language” Crackdown Hypocritical If Redskins Keep Name.

    LukeHB
    30 Jul 2014 | 3:27 am
#450825988 / gettyimages.com The NFL Competition Committee have spoken—in 2015 officials have been instructed to take an uncompromising stance on offensive, threatening and derogatory language. However, while derogatory language is being punished on-field, the move stinks of hypocrisy while off-field the league refuses force the Washington Redskins to change their racially insensitive name. It is not a new rule, but in light of the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal, and the entrance of Michael Sam—the first openly gay NFL player—into the league, it is no surprise that this become a…
  • Chatter Suggests NFL Will Have London Franchise Before Decades End.

    LukeHB
    18 Jul 2014 | 3:17 am
#452219036 / gettyimages.com In recent weeks, the NFL has grown more and more vocal about the prospect of a London franchise. Players, owners and league officials have for some time been dropping hints that a permanent team in London is very much part of the NFL’s long term growth plans. However the rhetoric is certainly ramping up as marquee players like Maurice Jones-Drew and Matt Schaub and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft have made some of the most telling statements yet about the prospect. Last week, Oakland Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew and quarterback Matt…
  • Do the Seattle Seahawks Own the NFL’s Best Secondary?

    LukeHB
    18 Jun 2014 | 8:04 am
#464399449 / gettyimages.com Ask the average NFL fan, and this question seems like a real no-brainer. Of course, would be the obvious answer. In a recent ranking of the Top Five Secondaries in the NFL, Mike Tanier of Sports on Earth put it this way. “The Seahawks ranked first. Go ahead and argue otherwise, once you are finished posting to your Flat Earth message board.” Seemingly, there is no reason even to debate this. He made no argument for this position. There is no need for discussion, no need to question, it’s simply a fact. Yet, debate we must. Tanier made a case…
  • NFL Draft 2014: Winners and Losers from First Round

    LukeHB
    9 May 2014 | 4:25 am
#488845697 / gettyimages.com The NFL Draft is officially underway, and as always, day one was full of surprises, shocks, steals, and head-scratchers. Who were the winners and losers of the first round? Let’s take a look Honorary Mentions Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney (1st Overall). Clowney is a home run hit, without a doubt. Though there were options available, including trading back for Khalil Mack, Clowney is a franchise guy right out of the gate. He is both huge, and quick, a rare combination in defensive ends. He was, in my opinion the best player in the draft, and went right…

  • Glover Quin Restructures No Fines For Suh Or Couplin

    Vince Vielhaber
    29 Aug 2014 | 11:55 am
The league office announced that there will be no fines handed out to Ndamukong Suh for his late hit on Chad Henne in the Jacksonville Jaguars preseason game a week ago.  There also will not be a fine for Jerome Couplin’s hit in the Jacksonville Jaguars game.  Both are good news for the Lions as Couplin likely could not afford to receive one. Also, today Glover Quin restructured his contract with the Detroit Lions to free up cap space this year.  The Lions likely did this in an effort to accommodate any roster moves done between now and Monday night’s game.  Multiple Detroit…
  • Kyle Van Noy Has Surgery To Repair Injured Muscle

    Vince Vielhaber
    29 Aug 2014 | 7:19 am
The Detroit Lions will be without the services of Kyle Van Noy for quite a while.  The team announced Thursday that he had surgery to repair an injured core muscle.  That type of injury takes some time to heal.  The team is currently evaluating whether to put Van Noy on injured reserve and bench him for the season or put him on a short term IR in which he could be eligible to return by mid season.  The short term IR seems most likely given he can be available later on this season. The injury to Van Noy continues the Detroit Lions struggles with second round picks.  They drafted Mikel…
  • Preseason Recap Detroit Lions Versus Buffalo Bills

    Vince Vielhaber
    29 Aug 2014 | 7:02 am
The Detroit Lions defeated the Buffalo Bills in the final preseason game last night 23-0.  Like always, preseason wins are useless.  In this instance, it was even more useless as the team rested 20 players, most of which were healthy starters.  They started several players who in all likelihood are not going to play much this season, if they make the team at all.  Coach Jim Caldwell said before the game that the starting line up for that game should be taken with a grain of salt as they wanted to see some things from some of the guys.  They saw quite a bit.  Now, they have to make the…

  • 10 lessons from the Little League World Series

    25 Aug 2014 | 10:42 am
As a kid, I dreamed of playing in the Little League World Series (LLWS). In terms of the sports calendar, it was the last hoorah before the start of school. I always wondered why St. Louis never had a Little League World Series team. Were we not good enough? After all, St. Louis IS a baseball town, right?Sure, we are. It's just that St. Louis youth baseball leagues are not affiliated with Little League Baseball, Inc. You know, the real Little League. It's not called Little League because of the size of the kids. That's really the name of the organization. The world has been a very turbulent…
  • Record participation in Coach It Right! Soccer Clinics

    18 Aug 2014 | 11:37 am
Last Wednesday, the Sports Commission wrapped up its Coach It Right! Soccer Clinics for the year. A clinic record 120 youth soccer coaches turned out to be taught by the man himself -- Missouri Youth Soccer Association state coaching director Denny Vaninger. All tolled, more than 250 coaches participated in the three clinics held at St, Alban Roe, Sts. Joachim & Ann and St. Louis University High School. By our calculations, this means that about 4,000 St. Louis area children will have a more positive soccer experience this season due to to the dedication of their coaches. We certainly…
  • Hammon hiring makes history...but it shouldn't

    8 Aug 2014 | 9:45 am
The San Antonio Spurs made history this week when the team hired retiring WNBA legend Becky Hammon as an assistant coach. She became the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in a major men's professional sports league in the United States. It's a big deal, but it shouldn't be. Here's the question I've heard and read all week on social media and sports talk radio:Will men listen to a woman?Sports seems to be this alternate universe where men are asexual beings born of, developed by only other men. Coaches are teachers. Specifically, coaches teach sports. In America, 87% of teachers are…
  • Coaches show great appreciation for Coach It Right!

    4 Aug 2014 | 8:57 am
I probably overuse the words 'great' and 'tremendous' on this blog, but the response to last week's Coach It Right! Soccer Clinic at St. Alban Roe in Wildwood has been both great and tremendous. The 70 coaches who came out were great sports. They showed a tremendous commitment to the kids they coach by learning from the very best.Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) state coaching director Denny Vaninger led a clinic focused specifically on coaching kids and what adults can do to make sure kids have fun while learning the beautiful game. The video below shows Denny taking some volunteers…
  • NFL meets with teams about sportsmanship

    31 Jul 2014 | 10:29 am
The NFL is taking the bullying and hazing debacle that went on in Miami last season very seriously. League officials will visit the training camps of all 32 franchises to address sportsmanship on the field and expectations relative to workplace conduct. Check out this link to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch story about this week's visit to St. Louis Rams training camp.To be clear, the league is visiting all 32 teams. The Rams are not being specifically targeted for any infractions. The Post-Dispatch story is highlighted because of the interest of this blog's readership and the thoroughness of the…
