Giants quarterback Eli Manning has had to learn new offensive this offeseason. It has been a good challenge Manning said according to Kevin Armstrong of the New York Daily News. “It’s reenergized me,” he said. “I’m trying to speed up the process of getting comfortable in the new system. I don’t have 10 years. I have a few months.” Eli Manning intends to improve his numbers from last season, a disappointing stretch in his career. Quarterback Josh Freeman, a first-round draft pick by the Bucs in 2009, lasted about six weeks with the Giants as they released him today according to Jordan Raanan of the Newark Star-Ledger. It was clear Thursday during OTAs that Freeman didn’t really factor into the team’s plans. He spent most of the team drills with a helmet in his hands. On one occasion when he did get on the field, the Giants were unable to get aligned properly and never ran a play. Freeman was immediately pulled in favor of Curtis Painter There were some serious concerns within the Giants organization about…

They are the percentage of plays in which offenses ran the ball collectively during the 1973, 1981, 1989 and 1997 seasons. Forty years ago NFL offenses typically ran the ball on nearly two out of every three plays, and Super Bowl’s were won by teams featuring Jim Taylor, Larry Csonka, and Franco Harris. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has rightfully been accused of the over-punishment of NFL players. His dictatorial actions have moved me and many others to accuse him of unfair practice in his actions against players, while dismissing serious repercussions for owners and officials. With the recent ‘slap on the wrist’ to Baltimore’s Ray Rice, it is apparent that what is occurring is Roger Goodell’s selective punishments are demonstrating his hypocrisy. Is is just me or did the offseason fly by this year? The NFLX is on the way and the HOF game will be here in no time.I won't be doing previews this season since it can become a bit redundant given all the coverage this league gets. My recommendation would be to go ahead and purchase the Football Outsiders Almanac. It's the perfect mix between advanced stats and practical analysis that gets you up to speed on every team, and it's a much higher quality breakdown than what you'll find on national websites or magazines. If you're just in it for casual fun, check out Andy Benoit's stuff…

The 2013/2014 is officially in the books and the Seattle Seahawks take home the big prize. I certainly didn't expect a blowout, but it wasn't all that surprising either.Harvin provided huge plays, the defense did what it did all year, and the offense took advantage of the mismatches. I doubt that Seattle will be as healthy next post-season, but they have all the pieces to contend for the foreseeable future. It was great to end the year on a high note going 7-3-1 ATS in the playoffs (20-7-2 over the final 9 weeks). I was on the wrong side of too many close decisions during the regular season,…

    20 Jan 2014 | 12:00 am
Championship Sunday is in the books and both favorites took care of business at home. Both games also stayed under the total. My picks cashed for a 2-0 ATS sweep, and I'm finishing up strong going 19-7-2 over the last 8 weeks. Each game played out according to script, despite what the public perception was heading into them. The Broncos outmatched the Patriots on both sides of the ball, and it wasn't all that competitive. The 49ers looked like they were going to continue their impressive run all the way to the Super Bowl, but on the backs of the 12th man, Seattle came up with huge plays…

It's about time. Off-field issues are one of the many things that defending Super Bowl Champions don't want to deal with, and a holdout from the face of your franchise and workhorse running back in a run-dominated offense is about the worst example of that there is. Fortunately, sources report that Lynch has ended his holdout and reported to training camp. All is forgiven, all is forgotten, and the Seahawks can move on with their title defense. Apparently the Seahawks didn't make any significant concessions - they might guarantee some additional money and forgive the fines, but not a whole…
  • Thoughts on Ray Rice's apology

    Brian Sprowl
    31 Jul 2014 | 10:35 am
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice held a press conference today to address his domestic violence situation and the subsequent two-game suspension he received earlier this week from the league. After bombing the initial presser he had with his wife back in May, Rice stood before the public by himself, and expressed contrition, while also apologizing to his wife for his actions. Rice talked about how he was going to have to live with this situation for the rest of his life, and how this situation was going to impact his family, specifically, his young daughter when she grows up and is able…
  • NFC East Preview: Philadelphia Eagles

    Evan Martone
    30 Jul 2014 | 8:30 pm
Before we begin analyzing training camp battles, offseason roster moves, and the season outlook of the 2014-2015 Eagles, we must go back to 2012-2013. A little known Quarterback named Nick Foles was selected in the 4th Round of the 2012 Draft out of Arizona, the team went 4-12 and the face of the Eagles for the past decade or so, Andy Reid, was fired leading to the hire of Chip Kelly, an up-tempo, no nonsense coach out of Oregon. The move was not without question marks. Would a Chip Kelly run thousand-plays-a-game offense translate to the bigger, faster, stronger NFL? The answer we got was an…
  • Mt. Rushmore of All-Time Greatest Quarterbacks

    Megan Landvatter
    30 Jul 2014 | 7:34 pm
Before selecting the quarterbacks for a Mt. Rushmore of all-time greats, @Baxter Colburn and I felt it was important to establish the criteria. Our selections have been based on championships, statistics, and their impact on the National Football League. After evaluating quarterbacks under these requirements, we chose Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Brett Favre, and Tom Brady for Mt. Rushmore. Yes, Marino may be one of the greatest players to never win a Super Bowl, but, the amount of records and game-winning drives belonging to Marino make him one of the best all-time. During his 17 NFL seasons,…
  • Brett Favre: Cheer or Jeer?

    Megan Landvatter
    30 Jul 2014 | 7:28 pm
Favre’s return to Lambeau has been highly anticipated. According to Packer’s president Mark Murphy, there is some concern regarding the fans response to Favre. Brett recently stated that he is not worried about being booed when he returns. This discussion really made me think about whether Wisconsin has moved on, and a few things came to mind. When Favre's name comes up now Packer fans make jokes and brush him off as if he was just another disappointing athlete. These jokes and hateful comments are just ridiculous. When I hear Packer fans say these things, I just want to scream. Scream…

  • Red Sox Trade John Lester To Oakland For Cespedes

    Robert Hyland
    31 Jul 2014 | 8:28 am
http://nepatstalk.com Reports have surfaced via CBS sports that the Boston Red Sox have traded ace Jon Lester along with Jonny Gomes to the Oakland Athletics in return for the big swinging left fielder Yoenis Cespedes and a draft pick. The reports bring an end to the rumors swirling that Boston would be trading Lester after contract negotiations run south. The deal makes sense for both teams with Lester going to the presumed championship contending A’s where his stellar postseason track record could be lengthened. Cespedes on the other hand will arrive in Boston as the team hopes to…
  • Jake Peavy Traded To The Giants: An A+ Deal

    Robert Hyland
    27 Jul 2014 | 8:27 am
http://nepatstalk.com (Photo By: SD Kirk) When the Boston Red Sox acquired Jake Peavy last season on their way to a World Series victory he proved a more than capable pitcher and a great competitor. Fast forward one calendar year from his arrival to Boston and Peavy is the second on a growing list of veterans who became roster casualties. With Jake Peavy traded to the Giants out in San Fransisco I have to say it is a great deal that has Boston headed in the right direction  and here’s why. Lack Of Performance – Most People in Boston enjoyed the first season Peavy was with the…
  • Don’t Call It A Red Sox Comeback… Seriously Don’t

    Robert Hyland
    26 Jul 2014 | 7:18 am
http://nepatstalk.com (Photo By: Keith Allison) The Boston Red Sox exited the All-Star break with a fresh approach to the season. With AJ Pierzynski ……. gone and Jon Lester’s contract negotiations held off until the end of the season the team began to right the ship with what looked like a good old fashion Red Sox comeback in the second half of the season. Unfortunately for Boston the illustrious comeback for the Sox lasted all of 4 games. Upon winning the initial four games after the break in convincing fashion and with a resurgence of David Ortiz the team has now lost…

  • NFL “Offensive Language” Crackdown Hypocritical If Redskins Keep Name.

    LukeHB
    30 Jul 2014 | 3:27 am
The NFL Competition Committee have spoken—in 2015 officials have been instructed to take an uncompromising stance on offensive, threatening and derogatory language. However, while derogatory language is being punished on-field, the move stinks of hypocrisy while off-field the league refuses force the Washington Redskins to change their racially insensitive name. It is not a new rule, but in light of the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal, and the entrance of Michael Sam—the first openly gay NFL player—into the league, it is no surprise that this become a point of real emphasis for…
  • Chatter Suggests NFL Will Have London Franchise Before Decades End.

    LukeHB
    18 Jul 2014 | 3:17 am
In recent weeks, the NFL has grown more and more vocal about the prospect of a London franchise. Players, owners and league officials have for some time been dropping hints that a permanent team in London is very much part of the NFL’s long term growth plans. However the rhetoric is certainly ramping up as marquee players like Maurice Jones-Drew and Matt Schaub and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft have made some of the most telling statements yet about the prospect. Last week, Oakland Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew and quarterback Matt Schaub admitted that…
  • Do the Seattle Seahawks Own the NFL’s Best Secondary?

    LukeHB
    18 Jun 2014 | 8:04 am
#464399449 / gettyimages.com Ask the average NFL fan, and this question seems like a real no-brainer. Of course, would be the obvious answer. In a recent ranking of the Top Five Secondaries in the NFL, Mike Tanier of Sports on Earth put it this way. “The Seahawks ranked first. Go ahead and argue otherwise, once you are finished posting to your Flat Earth message board.” Seemingly, there is no reason even to debate this. He made no argument for this position. There is no need for discussion, no need to question, it’s simply a fact. Yet, debate we must. Tanier made a case…
  • NFL Draft 2014: Winners and Losers from First Round

    LukeHB
    9 May 2014 | 4:25 am
#488845697 / gettyimages.com The NFL Draft is officially underway, and as always, day one was full of surprises, shocks, steals, and head-scratchers. Who were the winners and losers of the first round? Let’s take a look Honorary Mentions Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney (1st Overall). Clowney is a home run hit, without a doubt. Though there were options available, including trading back for Khalil Mack, Clowney is a franchise guy right out of the gate. He is both huge, and quick, a rare combination in defensive ends. He was, in my opinion the best player in the draft, and went right…
  • DeSean Jackson Signs With Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders Take Another Blow

    LukeHB
    2 Apr 2014 | 5:36 am
It’s official, DeSean Jackson will become Robert Griffin III’s go-to receiver as the passer attempts to bounce back from his disappointing sophomore season. The deal was reached after roughly 9 hours of negotiation, as the Redskins desperately tried to lock down terms before letting Jackson’s agent leave the building, knowing that if he did, the Oakland Raiders or San Francisco 49ers would swoop in and sign the star receiver from under their noses. Although terms of the deal are not yet available, the contract has been called “lucrative” for Jackson, and is…

    Detroit Lions News

  • Detroit Lions Sign Kris Redding And Release Cody Wilson

    Vince Vielhaber
    31 Jul 2014 | 11:09 am
The Detroit Lions made a few housekeeping moves today as reported by team reporter Tim Twentyman via twitter.  They waived wide receiver Cody Wilson from Central Michigan and signed defensive end Kris Redding from Wake Forest.  Redding went undrafted from Wake Forest this year and is hoping to catch on either on a practice squad or a final roster spot.  He is likely only a camp body for the Lions though as they already have a logjam of players fighting for active roster spots at defensive end.
  • Detroit Lions Officially Claim Receiver Quintin Payton

    Vince Vielhaber
    30 Jul 2014 | 11:52 am
The waiver claim has officially processed and the Detroit Lions have officially signed Quintin Payton, wide receiver out of North Carolina State.  He went undrafted and was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  While he is a long shot to make the team, he still provides the team with a 6’4″ frame for training camp.  Payton was signed to fill a roster spot vacated earlier this week when the Lions waived Kalonji Kashama with an injury designation.
  • Detroit Lions Halt Contract Talks With Ndamukong Suh

    Vince Vielhaber
    28 Jul 2014 | 12:58 pm
The Detroit Lions announced today that they have halted talks for a new contract with Ndamukong Suh.  Team president Tom Lewand announced today that they will not continue to discuss a deal with Suh or his agent until after the season.  For fans, this news is disheartening.  It is expected that Suh will void his deal at the end of the year and leave via free agency.  Lewand however offered fans a spec of hope that he will be retained.  He stated that he is not opposed to the use of the franchise tag in order to keep the star defensive tackle in Detroit after this season ends.  He is…
  • Detroit Lions Begin Rookie Part of Camp With 3 On PUP

    Vince Vielhaber
    24 Jul 2014 | 6:18 am
The Detroit Lions started allowing rookies to show up for camp on Tuesday.  With the veterans returning Sunday, they have began doing some housekeeping work by designating players for training camp PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.  The three on the list were not surprises, although one of them gave reason for pause. TJ Jones and Ziggy Ansah were dealing with shoulder issues and were expected to be on the PUP list to start training camp.  Golden Tate, however, was a bit of a surprise.  He stated that he landed on his shoulder wrong in minicamp, but that he was 100% he would be…
  • Detroit Lions Claim Receiver Reese Wiggins

    Vince Vielhaber
    21 Jul 2014 | 10:13 am
The Detroit Lions did a little more roster juggling today.  It was announced that on Friday they parted ways with wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt.       And today, they officially claimed receiver Reese Wiggins.     This is likely not a major adjustment as neither strike me as a potential to stick on the 53 man roster, but this move does have possible practice squad implications.  We will continue to monitor this as training camp gets closer.

  • NFL meets with teams about sportsmanship

    31 Jul 2014 | 10:29 am
The NFL is taking the bullying and hazing debacle that went on in Miami last season very seriously. League officials will visit the training camps of all 32 franchises to address sportsmanship on the field and expectations relative to workplace conduct. Check out this link to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch story about this week's visit to St. Louis Rams training camp.To be clear, the league is visiting all 32 teams. The Rams are not being specifically targeted for any infractions. The Post-Dispatch story is highlighted because of the interest of this blog's readership and the thoroughness of the…
  • Real men don't hit women

    25 Jul 2014 | 12:10 pm
I usually come up with catchier titles, but I think we need to get straight to the point today. You've certainly heard by now about Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, the domestic violence case with his fiancee (now wife) and the two-game suspension issued by the NFL earlier this week. This is not about that...at least not directly. This post is about us and our sons, what we're teaching them, and what we're allowing them to learn from other sources. If we want domestic violence toward women to stop, then we need to be clear in message and in practice.Simply put, real men don't hit women.
  • Jose Canseco should be 'sorry'

    24 Jul 2014 | 2:21 pm
Mark McGwire no longer speaks to Jose Canseco and doesn't want anything to do with him on any level. Can't say that I blame him. The two men were teammates and an integral part of the Oakland A's 1989 World Series championship team. Oakland recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of that championship and McGwire did not attend. He sent a videotaped tribute from Los Angeles, where he currently serves as hitting coach for the Dodgers. When asked by ESPNLosAngeles.com if there would ever be any reconciliation between the two men, McGwire said, "It's too late. I don't care to ever speak to him…
