Chris Johnson is expected to be released if the Tennessee Titans cannot deal him prior to the draft. If he hits the open market, the Jets should take a stab at the veteran running back. His explosiveness and his ability to break out the long run will improve Gang Green’s offense next year.

  • Overlooked Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees gets chance to impress Bears

    16 Apr 2014 | 10:17 pm
The Bears’ Halas Hall isn’t a foreign or intimidating place to Tommy Rees. The Notre Dame quarterback has roamed its grounds before. Rees, who played at nearby Lake Forest High, was there “a bunch” when his father, Bill, worked for the team in the late in 1990’s. And Rees said he stopped in during high school. Yet, Friday’s visit will be different. Very different. “It’s a little weird being from right there,” Rees said. “But I just look at it as a great opportunity.” It’s an opportunity during the Bears’ local pro day to prove he has some NFL value, …

If I get added to the team.’’ Projected to go in the top half of the first round in next month’s NFL draft, Pryor met with the Bears about two weeks ago. He came away impressed with coach Marc Trestman, general manager Phil Emery and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. ‘‘It was a positive…

The Bears’ search for a veteran backup quarterback prompted them to meet Monday with Josh Freeman, sources confirmed to the Sun-Times. Freeman, 26, was a first-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009. He threw for 4,065 yards and 27 touchdowns for them in 2012 and began last season as their starter before struggling and being released in October. He started one game after signing with the Minnesota Vikings, completing 20 of 53 passes for 190 yards with an interception Oct. 21 against the New York Giants. 1. The Bears have made some big offseason moves, especially on the defensive side of the ball. What kind of message does that send to the coaches and players? They understood what their problem was: defense. Marc [Trestman] has done a great job with the offense. They knew they had to get better people on defense, get a better pass rush and get better people to cover in the secondary. And they did that. Now, they still have to deal with Green Bay, Detroit and Minnesota in that division. But it’s pretty clear that they got better. I think it …

  • New York Jets Give Chris Johnson Fresh Start

    Luke Ewing
    16 Apr 2014 | 5:51 pm
Don McPeak-USA TODAY Sports The New York Jets weren’t going to allow this free agent to slip through their grasp. Chris Johnson and Gang Green struck a two-year deal this Wednesday as the Jets continue to make strides in improving their offense. Chris Johnson is a durable home run threat with top end speed that will help the Jets’ offense get points on the board in 2014. The lightning quick CJ2K will be an excellent complement to the hard running Chris Ivory, which will certainly help keep opposing defenses off balance. Johnson is also an effective receiver out of the backfield,…
  • Predicting RB Chris Johnson’s First Season With The New York Jets

    16 Apr 2014 | 2:53 pm
Getty Images Now that running back Chris Johnson has finally found a new home, fans of the New York Jets want to know what CJ2K can bring to the table in his first season. Everyone will need to realize that Johnson will not rush for over 2,000 yards or score 14 rushing touchdowns like he did in 2009. That was a remarkable year for the 28-year-old running back, but those numbers are not going to be repeated just because he signed with a new team. He has never rushed for less than a 1,000 yards in his career, however, and I expect Johnson to be able to continue that trend with New York. With…
  • Signing Chris Johnson Guarantees Playoff Appearance For New York Jets

    Tyler Leli
    16 Apr 2014 | 1:38 pm
Getty Images After narrowly missing out on the last playoff spot in the AFC in 2013, the New York Jets have gone aggressively about reconstructing their offense this offseason. On Wednesday afternoon, the Jets signed Chris Johnson to a two-year contract, in turn essentially guaranteeing playoff football during the upcoming season. The Jets will be getting a slightly watered-down version of Johnson over the next few years, as he has averaged 1,183 yards per season in the four years since his magnificent 2,006-yard performance in 2009. Sure, a bit of this can be put down as being less…
  • Chris Johnson Will Only Be Useful to New York Jets if Role is Limited

    16 Apr 2014 | 1:07 pm
Getty Images The New York Jets have agreed to a two year contract with veteran running back Chris Johnson today, making a move that many predicted in the wake of the former Pro Bowler’s release from the Tennessee Titans. Johnson will bring a speed element to the Jets’ backfield that they have lacked in recent seasons, but the Jets cannot afford to make the mistakes that the Titans did. The key to this signing is how the Jets use Johnson. He is no longer a star or an every down back, and the Jets would be very foolish to start him over Chris Ivory. Johnson averaged a career low 3.9…

Then finally on Tuesday word emerged that he was visiting the New York Jets. 24 hours later, a deal between the two sides has been reached. CJ2K will know officially be taking his talents to the Big Apple and a Jets team that’s trying to better itself on offense. When it comes to Rex Ryan teams, you know they’re usually going to be solid on defense. That was again the case in 2013, as there was no way in you know where that the Jets finish at 8-8 without a good…

  • Previewing the 2014 New York Giants Schedule Release

    Greg Cohen
    10 Apr 2014 | 1:36 pm
The New York Giants had a horrid start to their 2013 season, dropping their first six games and missing the playoffs yet again. Head coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Eli Manning will be back at it in 2014, though, and if their defensive adjustments work out, they could once again be competing for the NFC East division crown. If the Giants are in fact going to rebound in 2014, they’ll need to improve on their mediocre 4-4 mark at home of a year ago. It won’t be easy, as the New York Giants schedule includes the Cardinals, 49ers and Colts, who all had winning records in 2013, while the…

What happened? What’s going on here? The New York Giants even considering taking a quarterback at 12?! That’s insane! Hear me out. Let’s start off here. For the past couple of seasons, mock drafts everywhere had put Teddy Bridgewater as the number one pick for the upcoming draft in May, regardless of the team potentially picking at the spot. And that had been the consensus No. 1 pick up until a couple months ago, but why? Sure, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel are great quarterbacks in their own, but what jolted them above the former Louisville star? Some may argue that the…

Kellen Davis, a Tight End that spent most of the 2013 campaign with the Seattle Seahawks as the backup to Zach Miller, will be brought in with hopes to compete for the starting position this season. And with the current players at the position, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Davis has been playing in the NFL since 2008, where he spent five seasons with the Chicago Bears. After the 2012 season, Davis was released from the team. He was then signed onto the…

General Philosophy has always been intriguing, partly because it can be all-encompassing, and why barter principles when you can staunchly assert an all-around belief?  However, an overview is not necessarily a lazy ticket out of hard issues; in fact it can create an umbrella from which to branch.  Invariably, as the seasons of the NFL tick on and outsiders such as Mark Cuban sell the league’s demotion through over-promotion, health concerns become more of a background din (namely concussions), but ultimately some doping or mistaken or deliberate substance abuse will ring out…

  • Moving onto the Draft

    James Caughlin
    14 Apr 2014 | 3:14 pm
With four weeks remaining until the NFL Draft, the focus can now to the current crop of players looking to begin what they hope will be a long career in the league. For the Patriots, the draft presents an opportunity to capitalise on a good free agency period and supplement the current roster with an influx of talent that will help a Super Bowl run. In spite of a third straight AFC Championship appearance, the Patriots still have plenty of spots on the roster that can be filled if the draft class is good enough. In the past, Bill Belichick has made a habit of trading out of the first round…

I have no doubt in my mind that the former QB out of Louisville Teddy Bridgewater is the best QB in this year’s draft, he can make any throw and make big plays with his legs, to me, he is the most NFL ready QB in the draft. At the Scouting Combine many fans, scouts, General Managers and coaches were disappointed by not seeing him participating on any drills, that popped many questions and everyone was expecting Bridgewater to answer those questions and prove that he is the best QB in the draft at his pro day, but he did exactly the opposite, he was inaccurate and failed to complete…
  • RB Carlos Hyde is the “real deal”!

Darkhorse in the draft No one thinks that Running Back Carlos Hyde could be taken early in this years draft. But you better think twice, this man is “the real deal” and will definitely be a steal. I looked It through and my gut feeling says Cleveland Browns second pick (26), first round. He’s a big heavy back with a sensational development in college (Ohio State), and his stats speak for itself. A strong redzone back and a wonderKID in Fantasy Football. The Browns head into the 2014 NFL Draft with a ton of picks, and many fans wonder what Cleveland is going to do with the ten picks they have(hopefully its not a repeat of last year).Recently the Browns have brought in Fresno State QB Derek Carr, And UCF QB Blake Bortles with many more visits in the horizon.Talking to fans about this years QB class you get alot of mixed emotions about who they want to take and who they definitely do not want to take, so whomever the Browns take their will be some fans who absolutely hate the decision.Listening to professionals this is the deepest Draft…

We all know and there is no doubt that the Defensive End of South Carolina Jadeveon Clowney is one of the best prospects in the NFL Draft and I have absolutely no concern with his abilities to play on the field. If there is something we should worry about is his Work Ethic and his insistence to make more money. I don’t know if after he gets paid in the NFL he will perform the same as he did in college. If I were a General Manager I would draft him in the Top 5 for sure, taking that big risk considering his performance is the same in the NFL as it was in college, then he will be in…

  • Can Nebraska’s Bo Pelini Become America’s Favorite College Football Coach?

    admin
    14 Apr 2014 | 6:02 pm
There are times when Bo Pelini reminds me of my dad. My dad was a football coach. He helped found the Small Fry league in my tiny Upstate New York town. He coached kids between the ages of nine and 13. He taught the fundamentals. He taught trick plays. He taught you how to tackle the old fashioned way – hard and low – to make sure the runner didn’t go one more yard once you made contact with him. He also yelled – a lot. He yelled at other coaches. He yelled at parents. He yelled at referees. Sometimes, he’d yell at the kids. He didn’t yell because he was an asshole. He yelled…

I’ll try to keep this rant short and G-rated, as it is the textbook definition of a first-world problem. Toward the end of March, the powers that be over at the ESPN mother ship decided to create a March Madness bracket so fans could vote on who the best football coach in Big Ten history was. It seemed like a harmless-yet-entertaining way to fill their Big Ten blog with content during the deafeningly quiet college football offseason. The problem I have with their bracket is the same problem many people have with ESPN recently. Rather than report news, ESPN has decided to create news. How…

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The hammer was dropped. Wins were vacated. Scholarships were reduced. A legendary coach was fired. Penn State football was supposed to be left for dead — a culture and fanbase left behind, tattered and torn in the wake on one man’s horrible sins and the efforts of a few others to cover those sins up. Penn State football was to be no more. But that’s not how the story ended. That’s not what was written in the stars for one of the pillar programs of college football. Some players left. More stayed. A coach who once looked Tom…

  • What do you think about the Jets signing Chris Johnson?

    Jeremy Bannerman
    16 Apr 2014 | 2:05 pm
In my opinion, it's not a big deal. Running backs have become irrelevant in today's game. The Jets have a solid defense, but unless they develop a legitimate passing game, they won't be able to win consistently. It's all about the quarterback position in the NFL. Geno Smith (or Michael Vick) will determine what this team can do. Even when Chris Johnson rushed for 2,00+ yards, the Titans didn't make the playoffs. To me, this is just another signing. What do you think? Do you think the change of scenery will help CJ regain his old form?
  • Cleveland Browns prospecting Derek Carr. Do the Dogs Pull The Trigger?

    16 Apr 2014 | 10:21 am
This was a possibility I have long speculated, I am eager to report that the Browns are looking in to drafting Derek Carr with their twenty-sixth pick. Carr is an excellent quarterback and a true top-tier prospect. Although he played for Fresno State, which is not an upper echelon institution. His statistics were incredible regardless. Furthermore, Fresno State never shies from playing heavyweight teams. Their motto is "Anytime, Anyplace". I think that ultimately Sammy Watkins falls to the Browns and they scoop him with the fourth pick. Pairing a potentially deadly couple in Josh Gordon and…

The details of Freeman's contract have not been announced. Freeman, who played against Big Blue in his only start for the Minnesota Vikings last year will compete for the backup quarterback job alongside second-year signalcaller Ryan Nassib and veteran Curtis Painter, and is considered the favorite to win the job. Giants starting quarterback Eli Manning had ankle surgery last week and is out for six weeks, allowing Freeman…
  • Is this really the position that will put New England over the top?

    Josh Mahoney
    16 Apr 2014 | 9:40 am
As a Pats fan I'm not buying it. Unless Belichick and Co. are looking to trade up for Watkins or Evans than I think there are other needs that could be addressed first. Maybe I'm naive but I believe that the corps of Dobson, Edelman, Amendola will be fine next season. Right now i would put their biggest need as a solid pass rusher. They put the secondary in place now they need someone to force the QB to throw instead of allowing everyone the chance to make Thanksgiving dinner back there. Clearly Denver is the class of the AFC right now and the only way to stop that is to stop Manning because…

It’s official, DeSean Jackson will become Robert Griffin III’s go-to receiver as the passer attempts to bounce back from his disappointing sophomore season. The deal was reached after roughly 9 hours of negotiation, as the Redskins desperately tried to lock down terms before letting Jackson’s agent leave the building, knowing that if he did, the Oakland Raiders or San Francisco 49ers would swoop in and sign the star receiver from under their noses. Although terms of the deal are not yet available, the contract has been called “lucrative” for Jackson, and is…

Host cities are expected to be London, Birmingham, Liverpool or Manchester and Cardiff, though apparently Edinburgh has also made a good pitch, and may get a franchise instead of, or shared with one of the…

The NFL’s oldest and longest tenured owner, Ralph Wilson Jr, has died at the age of 95. Wilson was the founder of the Buffalo Bills in the AFL, and was instrumental in both the formation and early survival of the AFL and its subsequent merger with the NFL. Wilson, a World War II veteran—having served in the US Navy during the conflict—died of natural causes related to old age. Born in 1918, Wilson became a successful businessman after the Second World War. Wilson’s football career started as a minority shareholder in the NFL’s Detroit Lions in the late 50′s.

New York Jets general manager John Idzik finally had a chance to stamp his identity on the team in 2014, after a surprising 2013 season, handcuffed by the unwise moves of his predecessor. However, instead of the incremental improvement predicted, Idzik has struggled to find his groove, and the result is a team with no identity, no plan, and, at least right now, no hope of improving on their 2013 season. In 2014, Idzik had his first real opportunity to shape the team in the way he sees fit. His first taste as a GM came in 2013, a season where his activity was largely limited by some problems…

This isn't for those who already enjoy the game. This is for everyone else. This is a supplement to the Football 101 series I've been working on, that I hope to be the introduction to a game that a lot of people are quite simply confused by.I've collected together a few questions that come up quite often....Why is it so slow?Admittedly games take longer than other forms of football, however that has never struck me as meaning the games are actually slow. When the ball is in play, everything happens very quickly. When the ball's not in play, there are 22 players actions to review. I have never…

2013 was a resounding success for Chip Kelly, and his offensive system. He chose the right group of guys, and set off in search of wins. Throughout the season there were doubts over what he could actually achieve "at the NFL level", and he answered his detractors at every turn.2013 Recap:The Eagles end of season numbers didn't blow everyone away. This is really the one I’ve been waiting to do. I’m an NFL fan primarily, and a Bears fan before any other team. 2013 wasn’t the best year to be a Bears fan, with a new coaching staff and several key injuries (as well as THAT PLAY). There were exciting points though, so without being too biased this is the Bears.2013 Recap:Marc Trestman came in the door and Chicago had an offense to speak of. Unfortunately, without the guidance of a head coach like Lovie Smith the defense suffered. Mel Tucker filled in, and actually kept most of Lovie Smith’s scheme in place. This allowed the Bears…

Umm... It's been slow...Free AgencyOur headline here is that DeSean Jackson got knocked out of Philadelphia, and very quickly landed in D.C. with the Redskins. A sign of how quiet the week has been was the fact that DJax release basically dominated my twitter feed for two days. Two days! And it didn't even come as a shock, the Eagles had been shopping him around and had come up empty so they released him. The same scenario has played out several times in the last few weeks, so it's not even a revolutionary tactic. No, the headline grabbing part was his potential "gang ties"...Despite the…
