    25 Jul 2014 | 12:23 am
BOURBONNAIS — If there’s one place where Jay Cutler makes friends easily, it’s the quarterback room. Newcomer Jimmy Clausen discovered that immediately after signing with the Bears last month. Cutler helped Clausen begin a crash course in coach Marc Trestman’s offense that could pay big dividends in training camp. “He helped me out a lot — especially that first day, going through the formations and just the basic things they do in this offense,” Clausen said. “A lot of plays in the playbook aren’t necessarily the ones you run. So he kind of went through pretty much the…

Running back Jordan Lynch is just that popular. “I’m sure my dad will be down here every day,” Lynch said. “It’s only about 40 minutes away.” Lynch already knows his way around campus, having been a fan in attendance a handful of times. Fact is, though, Wilson doesn’t need to replicate his All-Pro seasons to help the Bears at safety. With Chris Conte on the physically unable to perform list and Brock Vereen ready…

Everyone seems to have different methods for the process, ranging from in-person negotiations to complete training camp holdouts. No matter what the strategy

While some never get the opportunity to redeem themselves, former Oregon TE Colt Lyerla was given one by the Green Bay Packers. After going undrafted, the Packers were smart to sign 21-year-old Lyerla to a free agent contract. Although he has a 4.61 speed and 39 inch vertical, he scared away teams from drafting him after quitting the Ducks team mid-season in 2013, and subsequently getting arrested for cocaine possession.…

Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints also signed a four-year deal –for $40 million. About half of it is guaranteed. It’s not that much more than Davis’ 4-Year $36.75 million contract, though, by comparison only about one-third, or $11.112 million is guaranteed. • Crunching Phil Steele’s Numbers: The Big Ten’s Best Position Groups

    admin
    21 Jul 2014 | 6:24 am
As the Big Ten media days draw near, I decided to do my own version of the Big Ten’s best position groups. I shouldn’t really say “my own”, as these results are based on Phil Steele’s All-Big Ten Conference team selections. I hear people say all the time that Phil Steele and his magazine take a lot of leg work out of the equation for people in the media. I guess you can count me in. What I essentially did was use Steele’s all-conference selections and attach a value to a player based on what team he made. Steele named a first, second, third and fourth team.

Everyone has a floor and a ceiling and that’s what we are pointing out here today. Our best case/worst case scenarios are different than over-unders. We are looking instead at what could happen to a team, given the talent they have, if they catch all or none of the breaks. I’ve done this in the past for NFL teams and caught flack from people who say “the best case and worst case for every team is going undefeated or winless.” In theory, that’s true. In reality, there aren’t many teams, especially in your major college football conferences, who have to worry…

While we already have discussed the Marshawn Lynch contract on the site in the past I thought in light of his holdout that we could use this as an opportunity to look at certain distinctions between contract situations. On it’s face the immediate reaction to Lynch holding out is that Jamaal Charles got a raise and thus the Seahawks should follow the pattern to give Lynch what he deserves. However, the two contract situations are very different.Charles was underpaid during the term of his agreement. Based on his production at the time of signing (which was more or less near the end of the…

Even as the guard market has eroded somewhat, the deal signed by Yanda three years ago affords the Ravens top-level play at a price millions below the top of the positional market. This holds true in terms of this year’s cap cost, cash cost, and average salary per year. The deal offers a good example of the effect that draft status as a rookie has on later contract negotiations. I wrote about Charles the other day and painted the picture about how much of a bargain he is compared to the other players in the market. Going back to 2012, on a team completely devoid of offensive talent, Charles ran for over 1,500 yards.  Considering he was returning from injury it was an incredible season that was lost in the shuffle because Adrian Peterson had a year for the ages also coming back from injury. Topping last season’s League-leading offense in scoring, total yards and passing will be no easy feat for the Denver Broncos, especially with Moreno off the roster and a really tough schedule. Weaknesses in their running game and DL have been addressed however, with their off-season pick-ups. Rivals should expect to bring nothing short of their A-Game if they want to score a W against this cohesive team of highly-motivated, ultra-dedicated and uber-talented pros. **I predict that** the Broncos will go 12-4, wrap up the AFC again and vindicate themselves vs either the Seahawks or the 49ers…

What if Peyton Manning can’t start for whatever reason? Is third year back-up **QB, Brock Osweller** ready to rumble? The 6’8” 240 lbs former Arizona State Sun Devil has looked good thus far in practice and did not disgrace himself in the 2nd half of the season finale vs Oakland. He completed 9 of 13 passes, threw for 288 yds but was sacked twice. Aside from his height and his mentor, Brock has smarts on his side which is always a plus. (As an interesting side note, Osweller graduated from his Alma Mater with a Bachelor in Political Science then interned with former Cardinals QB and US…

**RB Knowshon Moreno.** The Bronco’s #1 **RB** last year rushed for 1,000 yds with 60 receptions, making him Manning’s most reliable pass protector. Unfortunately for Moreno and his new team, the Dolphins, Knowshon just underwent arthroscopic surgery on a nasty knee injury and is unlikely to make training camp. Fortunately for the Broncos, Montee Ball is more than capable of stepping into the #1 RB spot. Ball has the smarts to understand pass protection and the fearlessness to throw himself at whoever gets loose long enough **for** Manning **to get away.** **WR Eric Decker.** Peyton…

**WR Wes Welker** (#83) The 11-yr veteran from Texas Tech was the definition of a difference maker in his inaugural Broncos season. His 73 catches and 10 TD receptions earned him the Denver Athletic Club title of “Athlete of the Year.” The 5-time Pro-Bowler already owns the most 100-catch campaigns (5) in NFL history and graduated college as the NCAA record-holder for punt return yards (1,761) and punt return scores (8). There is little reason to predict anything less than another outstanding season from the former Patriots star and future Hall of Famer. **RB Montee Ball** (#28). The 2013…

  • Rob Gronkowski Cleared to Practice

    Greg Zoino
    24 Jul 2014 | 7:43 am
http://nepatstalk.com (Photo By: Jack Newton) With training camp practices beginning this week, Patriots fans received great news Wednesday from coach Bill Belichick: Rob Gronkowski has been cleared to play. The all-pro tight end is coming off an ACL tear that occurred in December against the Cleveland Browns and there were some questions as to whether he’d be ready to practice in time for the start of camp. Patriots’ fans will obviously be expecting hugw numbers from the big man this season. With the additions made on defense this off-season, the offense will need to step up and produce…
  • Boston Celtics Hope To Stabilize Offense With Evan Turner

http://nepatstalk.com (Photo By: Keith Allison) Multiple sources have reported that the Boston Celtics have agreed with a deal with the athletic free agent shooting guard Evan Turner. Turner was drafted by the Sixers second overall in the 2010 NBA draft and played in Philadelphia up until lasts season where he finished his season with the Indiana Pacers after being traded. Turner being a free agent came as a surprise as many initially expected the Pacers would tender a qualifying offer for the 25 year old however due to personal reasons, presumably linked to Turner’s off court attitude,…

http://nepatstalk.com (Photp By: Bob P.B.) The “beer and chicken” scandal several seasons ago in Boston ended with the departure of many Red Sox members. The biggest move other than firing Bobby Valentine was the massive trade that sent a multitude of players to L.A. for a bundle of youth. One of those players headed from Boston to L.A. was Josh Beckett who ironically enough is now playing alongside the very player who initially brought Becket to Boston, Hanley Ramirez. Hanley Ramirez isn’t the most prominent name in Boston but he once was the most decorated shortstop…

  • Chatter Suggests NFL Will Have London Franchise Before Decades End.

    LukeHB
    18 Jul 2014 | 3:17 am
In recent weeks, the NFL has grown more and more vocal about the prospect of a London franchise. Players, owners and league officials have been dropping hints that a permanent team in London is very much part of the NFL’s long term growth plans. However the rhetoric is certainly ramping up as marquee players like Maurice Jones-Drew and Matt Schaub and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft have made some of the most telling statements yet about the prospect. Last week, Oakland Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew and quarterback Matt Schaub admitted that they believed a UK…
  • Do the Seattle Seahawks Own the NFL’s Best Secondary?

#464399449 / gettyimages.com Ask the average NFL fan, and this question seems like a real no-brainer. Of course, would be the obvious answer. In a recent ranking of the Top Five Secondaries in the NFL, Mike Tanier of Sports on Earth put it this way. “The Seahawks ranked first. Go ahead and argue otherwise, once you are finished posting to your Flat Earth message board.” Seemingly, there is no reason even to debate this. He made no argument for this position. There is no need for discussion, no need to question, it’s simply a fact. Yet, debate we must. Tanier made a case…
  • NFL Draft 2014: Winners and Losers from First Round

#488845697 / gettyimages.com The NFL Draft is officially underway, and as always, day one was full of surprises, shocks, steals, and head-scratchers. Who were the winners and losers of the first round? Let’s take a look Honorary Mentions Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney (1st Overall). Clowney is a home run hit, without a doubt. Though there were options available, including trading back for Khalil Mack, Clowney is a franchise guy right out of the gate. He is both huge, and quick, a rare combination in defensive ends. He was, in my opinion the best player in the draft, and went right…
  • DeSean Jackson Signs With Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders Take Another Blow

    2 Apr 2014 | 5:36 am
It’s official, DeSean Jackson will become Robert Griffin III’s go-to receiver as the passer attempts to bounce back from his disappointing sophomore season. The deal was reached after roughly 9 hours of negotiation, as the Redskins desperately tried to lock down terms before letting Jackson’s agent leave the building, knowing that if he did, the Oakland Raiders or San Francisco 49ers would swoop in and sign the star receiver from under their noses. Although terms of the deal are not yet available, the contract has been called “lucrative” for Jackson, and is…
  • NFL To Relocate Four Teams To The UK, Form NFC Atlantic Division

A Note To All Readers: This article was originally posted on April 1st 2014, also known as April Fools Day. Make of that what you will! The NFL significantly ramped up its UK expansion plans, when the league and owners provisionally agreed to relocate 4 teams to the UK by 2017, forming NFC Atlantic division. The news was confirmed by a team source with in depth knowledge of the situation. Host cities are expected to be London, Birmingham, Liverpool or Manchester and Cardiff, though apparently Edinburgh has also made a good pitch, and may get a franchise instead of, or shared with one of the…

  • Detroit Lions Begin Rookie Part of Camp With 3 On PUP

    Vince Vielhaber
    24 Jul 2014 | 6:18 am
The Detroit Lions started allowing rookies to show up for camp on Tuesday.  With the veterans returning Sunday, they have began doing some housekeeping work by designating players for training camp PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.  The three on the list were not surprises, although one of them gave reason for pause. TJ Jones and Ziggy Ansah were dealing with shoulder issues and were expected to be on the PUP list to start training camp.  Golden Tate, however, was a bit of a surprise.  He stated that he landed on his shoulder wrong in minicamp, but that he was 100% he would be…
  • Detroit Lions Claim Receiver Reese Wiggins

The Detroit Lions did a little more roster juggling today.  It was announced that on Friday they parted ways with wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt.       And today, they officially claimed receiver Reese Wiggins.     This is likely not a major adjustment as neither strike me as a potential to stick on the 53 man roster, but this move does have possible practice squad implications.  We will continue to monitor this as training camp gets closer.
  • Detroit Lions Sign Guard Garrett Reynolds

    20 Jul 2014 | 12:19 pm
The Detroit Lions signed guard Garrett Reynolds to a contract just a week away from training camp.  Reynolds is expected to compete with the veteran guards already on the roster for a spot.  While he is likely not going to make the active roster, he does have some experience under his belt that makes his signing a bit more interesting.  Below is an excerpt from detroitlions.com which explains why Reynolds is one to keep an eye on. Reynolds, 27, a former fifth-round draft pick, spent the last four years with the Atlanta Falcons. He’s played in 42 career games with 23 starts, including 10…
  • Detroit Lions Sign Running Back George Winn

    Vince Vielhaber
    20 Jul 2014 | 12:01 pm
The Detroit Lions signed running back George Winn.  Below is an excerpt from detroitlions.com giving an overview on who Winn is.   Winn, a Southfield native, rushed for 1,334 yards as a senior at Cincinnati in 2012. He went undrafted last year and spent time on the practice squads in Oakland, Pittsburgh and Dallas.   While Winn is likely just camp fodder, it is important to note that if he impresses in training camp which opens for veterans next week, he could be competing for a spot on the Detroit Lions practice squad.  I would not expect to see him hit the active roster at all…

It came as a big surprise to fans when the Detroit Lions announced the hiring of Jim Caldwell as their new head coach.  Fans everywhere wanted and expected the Lions to hire Ken Whisenhunt.  Unfortunately, he wanted to coach in Tennessee instead and they were also pursuing him.  When he announced he was going to coach the Titans, Detroit Lions fans speculated who would interview next.  No one was happy with the current selection of interviewees and there were still some teams in the playoffs with quality assistants that could not yet be interviewed.  Instead, the Detroit Lions announced…

  • Jose Canseco should be 'sorry'

    24 Jul 2014 | 2:21 pm
Mark McGwire no longer speaks to Jose Canseco and doesn't want anything to do with him on any level. Can't say that I blame him. The two men were teammates and an integral part of the Oakland A's 1989 World Series championship team. Oakland recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of that championship and McGwire did not attend. He sent a videotaped tribute from Los Angeles, where he currently serves as hitting coach for the Dodgers. When asked by ESPNLosAngeles.com if there would ever be any reconciliation between the two men, McGwire said, "It's too late. I don't care to ever speak to him…

  • Why your son will blow out his arm

    14 Jul 2014 | 10:50 am
Baseball has a serious problem on its hands. Too many pitchers are having the dreaded Tommy John Surgery. It puts athletes on the shelf for a year or more and may end a pitching career. Tommy John Surgery is becoming more prevalent at the professional, college and high school levels. What gives? Why are pitchers blowing out their elbows so much more than they used to?First, it's good to consult an expert. In this case, we'll consult the expert. Dr. James Andrews is widely considered the best orthopedic surgeon in the world. More often than not, your favorite athlete will at least consult this…
