  • [Steelers News] Steelers Willie Colon Will Move From Tackle To Guard

    Sweets
    16 May 2012 | 1:42 pm
The Pittsburgh Steelers have used this offseason to aggressively patch up an offensive line that stood out as perhaps the team's greatest weakness in 2011. First-round pick David DeCastro is an immediate starter at right guard. The team's second-round pick Mike Adams is penciled in at tackle, along with their second-round pick of 2011, Marcus Gilbert. That means changes for veteran Willie Colon, who confirmed Wednesday he'll shift from right tackle to the inside. "I've made the transition to left guard. I like it. It's just a matter of learning the verbiage," Colon told Mike Prisuta…

As the NFL, NFL Players Association and New Orleans Saints continue to spar over the bounty program the team apparently utilized from 2009-2011, the league is reportedly ready to reveal more evidence it obtained while laying out its case over the past few months. Per The New York Times' Judy Battista, the NFL is weighing the option of releasing more of its findings to the public, though it continues to prioritize the protection of the sources used in its investigation, an approach that will likely keep much of the documentation under lock and key. "If people hadn't been willing to come…

  • Brandon Hardin becomes last Bears draftee to sign

    16 May 2012 | 2:27 am
The Bears weren’t the first NFL team to sign all their draft picks, but they continue to be front-runners in their efforts to ensure there will be no drama heading into training camp. Not among the rookies, at least. Pro Bowl running back Matt Forte still is seeking a long-term deal and isn’t expected to sign his franchise tender any time soon, but the Bears came to terms with their last unsigned draft pick Tuesday. Safety Brandon Hardin, a third-round pick, got a four-year contract worth $2.7 million, a league source said. Other teams that have signed all their draft …
  • Jay Cutler concerned about Bears’ offensive line

During an appearance Monday at a Chicago school, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler looked lean and sounded upbeat about an array of topics, from his weapons to his position coach to the impending arrival of his first child. Yet he seemed to confirm a potential problem that could threaten a championship run in 2012: the offensive line. “You know, the offensive line is definitely going to be a concern and seeing where those guys are going to fit in and seeing what five we go with,” Cutler said when asked a general question about the excitement for the upcoming season. “If …

Forte is seeking a long-term deal instead of the one-year, $7.7 million franchise tender for 2012. But Cutler expects Forte to rejoin the team by Week 1. “Last time I saw him, he said he was lonely. In his initial interview with local reporters in February, new Bears quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates avoided any controversy, gushed about his peers and players and maintained a calm, cool demeanor. • Tannehill risky but right pick for Miami

    29 Apr 2012 | 2:15 am
The questions are falling like summer rain in Florida. The Miami Dolphins are copping some heavy criticism for taking Ryan Tannehill at No.8 in the NFL draft this week. Some experts believe the Texas A&M wideout-cum-signal-caller is inexperienced, and somewhat inaccurate. The Palm Beach Post called the pick "a tremendous risk". No riskier than bright orange jerseys, really. Most concede the young Texan has potential, especially because of his size (he's 6'4), fleet-footedness, and arm strength, which, if you watch his highlight reel or pro day tape, shows the player's ability to throw…

  • How the Jets should use Tebow

    2 Apr 2012 | 5:57 am
Grantland's Chris Brown recently argued that Tim Tebow's success as a Jet will require him to be a passing threat as much as a runner. Brown is adamant that there's minimal opportunity for Tebow as a Wildcat attacker, which at this early stage, seems the likely designation for New York's hottest recruit. He contends that in order for Tebow to find success in situational plays as the back-up quarterback, he needs some throwing options up his sleeve. In other words, he needs to be more than a Wildcat, or perhaps, a wildcard. These are fair points, but I'm not sure I agree Tebow should be closer…

Could Terrell Owens be a fit for the Raiders? Carson Palmer invited Owens along for a workout this past offseason along with Raiders wide outs Darrius Heyward-Bey and Eddie McGee and tight end David Ausberry. Palmer didn’t come right out and say he wanted Owens, but at the same time seemed to be more positive than negative about Owens. “I love the guys we have,” Palmer said. “I don’t know…

  • ♠ Falcons and The Draft ♠

    Mike Crosby
    25 Apr 2012 | 10:57 am
The Falcons won't receive a first round pick because of the Julio Jones trade. This gives them time to think about what they need and who can feel it. I would like to see them get help for John Abraham on the pass rush and also a TE to replace Tony Gonzalez who is getting close to retirement. I believe Weatherspoon will take charge in Lofton's absence from the team. I also believe they should draft Nick Perry DE from the Trojans. He is a good athlete in my opinion and with some help he can play on the next level. Thats all I have to say on the topic for now.

The Denver Broncos have made a big mistake of picking up Payton Manning and getting rid of Tim Tebow.  Payton is damaged goods and is not as good of a quarterback as he used to be. Tebow has done Denver justice the last two seasons and was thrown out as soon a Payton comes in. Denver will not play as good as everyone thinks in my opinion. I am a die hard Falcons fan, but i feel Tebow was done wrong.  You give away a quarterback who is steady improving for one who hasn't played all last season. Even though payton has done alot in his career he is not ready for a season in the…

So the quarterback for the Colts is leaving. The Colts will most likely pick up Andrew Luck. Payton Manning will have to choose a place where he feels best. They also have Bess  in their arsenal. In my opinion he will be better there. He could also go to Arizona and play with Larry Fitzgerald.

Heading into the 2011 season, the Philadelphia Eagles had legitimate reasons to worry about four of their five positions on the offensive line. Left guard Evan Mathis was a journeyman veteran who was not brought into camp to even compete for a starting job. Center Jason Kelce and right guard Danny Watkins were rookies, and right tackle Todd Herremans was still learning a position that he hadn’t played in seven years. New York Jets

  • Despite 2010 Success, a “Hard Knocks” Sequel is Not Happening for the New York Jets in 2012

    Jon Presser
    13 May 2012 | 1:25 am
Two seasons ago, HBO’s NFL training camp documentary series, “Hard Knocks,” profiled the upstart New York Jets, in a five-week exposition that football fans couldn’t get enough of. Led by second-year head coach Rex Ryan and second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez, the 2010 season was a memorable one, especially for the folks at NFL Films and HBO, after the program would go on to win an Emmy. Meanwhile, the Jets didn’t have the hangover that plagued some previous Hard Knocks participants, as they would go on to have an 11-5 season, culminating in a trip to the AFC…
  • The Strength of The 2012 New York Jets Could Be The Defensive Line

    Akiva Goldenberg
    12 May 2012 | 6:07 pm
When the New York Jets decided to pass on a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers and instead selected defensive end Quinton Coples with the 16th overall pick, they were taking a risk. Coples didn’t play like a first round pick in 2011 and had motor concerns going into the 2012 NFL Draft. Despite this fact the strength of the team might still be the defensive line. According to Profootballfocus.com (PFF) Sione Pouha was the NFL‘s best run stopping nose tackle in 2011, a sentiment I agree with. Muhammad Wilkerson improved as a five technique defensive end in the second half of the…
  • Wayne Hunter Among Many New York Jets Excited About Tony Sparano and His Offensive Scheme

    Jon Presser
    11 May 2012 | 12:39 pm
You don’t have to tell Wayne Hunter that he stunk last year in his first year as a starter, in his ninth NFL season. The New York Jets offensive lineman is well aware that his up-and-down play at right tackle made him the weak link on a normally stout offensive line that took a step back overall as a unit in 2011. “I had good games, I had great games, but I also had some bad games,” Hunter said. “Being the new piece in the puzzle with the O-line, I didn’t pick up where [Damien Woody] left off.” Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was noncommittal about handing Hunter…
  • Why Kyle Wilson Is Not A Good Option At Nickel CB For The New York Jets

    Akiva Goldenberg
    10 May 2012 | 10:27 pm
Recently I wrote an article about the weaknesses of the New York Jets in 2011. Some of my followers and their followers strongly disagreed that Kyle Wilson was a liability as a nickel cornerback last season. When I cited other sources, such as profootballfocus.com (PFF) or Matt Miller of New Era Scouting, they said there were plenty of other sources that contradicted mine. So I went back and looked at the numbers to prove my point. Apparently out of all NFL cornerbacks featured prominently on defense this past season, Wilson allowed the seventh highest completion percentage. He allowed…
  • New York Jets Cornerback Darrelle Revis Rips New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick

    Chris Gamble
    10 May 2012 | 6:50 pm
I think it is safe to say there has never been any love lost between the New York Jets and New England Patriots.  I also think it is safe to say that Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick are not planning any trips to Disney World together.  In March, Revis appeared on ESPN with Rob Gronkowski and played a word association game.  Belichick’s name was one of the words and Revis answered with “jerk.”  Today, in the Jets locker room at their Florham Park training facility Revis was asked to clarify those statements.  Not only did Revis clarify them, he…

  • Giants to Get Their Super Bowl Rings Today

    Matt Loede
    16 May 2012 | 8:06 am
The champions Giants are getting their title rings today, as punter Steve Weatherford tweeted out a pic of the rings on Tuesday to show the fans exactly the hardware the players will be walking around with. The Giants earned the rings with a hard fought 21-17 win over the Pats in Super Bowl XLVI back in February. The team will get the rings in a private ceremony at Tiffany & Co. in Manhattan. Tiffany designed the rings for the team with consultation from team president John Mara, general manager Jerry Reese, head coach Tom Coughlin, and the team’s captains, Eli Manning, Justin Tuck…
  • Giants Playbook: The Huddle

    16 May 2012 | 7:49 am
We found a 2009 Giants defensive playbook, and as promised, we’re going to break it down a bit here. Today’s entry focuses on: The Huddle I bet you never thought the huddle was this complicated and detailed. Take a look at it. Everything and everyone is assigned a specific role. Why? To eliminate confusion. Look, if you got 8 guys screaming the down and distance, it’s going to get complicated. Do they need to say where the lineman should place their hands (on their knees)? I don’t know, I think that’s a bit much. But, we know that NFL coaches are control freaks,…

You have to love the Internet. If you search, there is a wealth of information from coaches about football. You’ll find, after some searching, old playbooks. I came across the 2009 Giants defensive playbook. This is when Bill Sheridan was coordinator. It’s a fascinating look at defenses and teams. I’ll embed it here. Take a look. Over the next few days, we’ll take out some things and break it down a bit. Enjoy:

  • Hosley, Kuhn and Jackson.

    Big Daddy
    14 May 2012 | 8:03 pm
The Giants third round pick was a bit of a surprise, the undersized Pacmanesque cornerback Jayron Hosley. First there were the off the field incidents and a positive drug test at the combine, which was pretty stupid. So let’s move on and hope he grows up….fast. The other defensive player picked was in the seventh round, a little known defensive tackle and freaky athlete from Germany named Markus Kuhn. I am also going to mention some of the UDFAs and one in particular Janzen Jackson later in this article.   Jayron Hosley seems like a likable kid who just needs some growing up to do,…

  • Jaguars trade up, select Blackmon

    Travis Seger
    27 Apr 2012 | 7:45 am
After weeks of assuming the Jacksonville Jaguars were going to trade down from the seventh pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, general manager Gene Smith did the opposite and traded up two spots and used the fifth pick to select Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon. The Jaguars gave up their fourth round pick (101st overall) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to move up and get their man. Blackmon, the most promising wide receiver in this draft, caught 122 passes for 1,522 yards and 18 touchdowns last season at Oklahoma State. The selection of Blackmon gives Jaguars quarterback…

  • Details of Rashean Mathis’ contract released

    Travis Seger
    9 Mar 2012 | 6:53 am
As we wrote about yesterday, the Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed cornerback Rashean Mathis to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million. We now have the details of that contract thanks to Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union. According to Ganguli, Mathis received a $1 million signing bonus, and his base salary for 2012 will be $950,000. The rest of the contract depends on Mathis reaching incentives based on the percentage of plays he participates in. As long as Mathis is healthy, he should be able to realize the full potential of the contract. Mathis, who sustained a season-ending ACL injury…
  • Jaguars Re-Sign Rashean Mathis

    Travis Seger
    8 Mar 2012 | 7:48 am
The Jacksonville Jaguars locked down one of their own before he could hit the open market as a free agent next week, re-signing cornerback Rashean Mathis to a one-year deal. According to Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union, the deal is an incentive-laden one worth $5 million. Mathis, a Jacksonville native, was drafted by the Jaguars in the second round of the 2003 NFL draft, and is the team’s all-time leader in interceptions. Mathis, who made the Pro Bowl in 2006, was having his best season since that time in 2011 before a torn anterior cruciate ligament ended his season in…
  • New Series: Re-Signing their Own

    Travis Seger
    6 Mar 2012 | 12:32 pm
Now that the Jacksonville Jaguars have placed the franchise tag on kicker Josh Scobee, keeping him in Jacksonville through at least the 2012 season, we turn our attention to the players who will be able to test the market as unrestricted free agents once free agency opens up on March 13. In our upcoming “Re-signing their Own” series, we will take a look at each player, and discuss whether we think the Jaguars should and/or will attempt to re-sign them. With Scobee now franchised, the Jaguars have ten free agents that we will be looking at. They are: DE Jeremy Mincey CB Rashean…
